GOES-16 &#8220;Clean&#8221; Infrared Window (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/education\/docs\/ABI-bands-FS\/ABI_Band_13_FS_CLEAN_LW_IR_FINAL.pdf\"><strong>10.3 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images<em><strong> (above; <\/strong>also available as a 23-Mbyte <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/07\/170724_goes16_infrared_spc_storm_reports_MD_anim.gif\">animated GIF<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> showed that there were 3 distinct &#8220;pulses&#8221; when cloud-top infrared brightness temperatures cooled to the -71 to -75\u00ba C range <em>(lighter gray pixels embedded within dark black regions)<\/em> before the storm produced the tornado at 0529 UTC. Since one of the default GOES-16 <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/23225\"><strong>Mesoscale Sectors<\/strong><\/a> was providing coverage over the eastern US, imagery was available at 1-minute intervals.<\/p>\n<p>A comparison of 1-minute GOES-16 vs 15-minute GOES-13 <em>(GOES-East)<\/em> Infrared Window images<em><strong> (below; <\/strong>also available as a 17-Mbyte<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/07\/170724_goes16_goes13_infrared_spc_storm_reports_MD_anim.gif\">animated GIF<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> provided a convincing demonstration of the value of more frequent image scan intervals for monitoring severe convection.
