A Himawari-8 &#8220;Target Sector&#8221; was positioned over that region &#8212; providing rapid-scan<em> (2.5-minute interval)<\/em> imagery &#8212; as seen in a 2-panel comparison of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.data.jma.go.jp\/mscweb\/en\/himawari89\/space_segment\/spsg_ahi.html\"><strong>AHI<\/strong><\/a> Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) and Infrared Window (10.4 \u00b5m) data covering the first 7 hours of the eruption <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em>. Ash plume infrared brightness temperatures quickly became -40\u00baC and colder<em> (bright green enhancement)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/03\/170325_himawari8_rgb_Kambalny_volcano_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/03\/HIMAWARI-8.AHI.2017-03-25_10-30-00.RGB1112um_8511um_11um.Kuril_Islands_Northeast_1_km.png\" alt=\"Himarari-8 false-color RGB images [click to play animation]\" width=\"640\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Himarari-8 false-color RGB images [Click to play animation]<\/p><\/div>Himawari-8 false-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images from the <a href=\"http:\/\/volcano.ssec.wisc.edu\/\"><strong>NOAA\/CIMSS Volcanic Cloud Monitoring<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed the ash plume drifting south-southwestward during the subsequent nighttime hours. It is interesting to note the formation and subsequent northwestward motion of numerous contrails <em>(darker<\/em> <em>green linear features)<\/em> across the region, due to the close proximity of a major Tokyo flight corridor.<\/p>\n<p>True-color RGB images from Terra MODIS, Suomi NPP VIIRS and Aqua MODIS, viewed using <a href=\"https:\/\/re.ssec.wisc.edu\/s\/1pAWc\"><strong>RealEarth<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> revealed the long ash plume during the late morning and early afternoon on 25 March.
