The winds reported by the aircraft were from a direction of <strong>190\u00c2\u00ba<\/strong> at a speed of <strong>76 knots<\/strong> &#8212; and nearby GOES-derived atmospheric motion vectors <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> generally had speeds of around 50 knots or less<em><strong><\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>However, note the strong dry-to-moist <em>(dark blue to white)<\/em> gradient seen on the 8-km resolution GOES-11 water vapor imagery above &#8212; this is a common signature that often occurs along the axis of a strong jet streak. This strong water vapor gradient is more well-defined when viewed on a 1-km resolution MODIS water vapor image from 21:40 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/04\/090405_MODIS_WV.GIF\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/04\/090405_MODIS_WV.GIF\" alt=\"MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An animation of 4-km resolution GOES-13 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor imagery <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> also shows this strong &#8220;jet streak gradient&#8221; signature just to the west of Annette Island <em>(ANN)<\/em>.
