The fires grew very quickly during the late morning and early afternoon hours, due to strong southwesterly winds <em>(with gusts as high as <strong>67 mph<\/strong> in Oklahoma)<\/em> behind a dryline (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/03\/170306_surface_analyses_anim.gif\"><strong>surface analyses<\/strong><\/a>); a cold front then moved southward across the region during the late afternoon and evening hours, bringing strong northerly\/northwesterly winds.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/03\/170306-07_goes16_goes13_shortwaveIR_KS_OK_TX_fires_anim.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/03\/G16_G13_IR2_OK_KS_TX_06MAR2017_958x638_B72_00437_2017065_233029_233000_0002PANELS.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-16 (left) and GOES-13 (right) 3.9 \u00b5m Shortwave Infrared images [click to play MP4 animation]\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 (left) and GOES-13 (right) Shortwave Infrared (3.9 \u00b5m) images [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div><em>*\u00a0 GOES-16 data posted on this page are preliminary, non-operational and are undergoing testing *<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the 2-panel comparison shown above <em>(also available as a 204 Mbyte<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/03\/170306-07_goes16_goes13_shortwaveIR_KS_OK_TX_fires_anim.gif\">animated GIF<\/a><\/strong><\/em>), Shortwave Infrared (3.9 \u00b5m) images &#8212; 1-minute interval (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/23225\"><strong>Mesoscale Sector<\/strong><\/a>) 2-km resolution <strong>GOES-16<\/strong> vs. 5-7 minute interval (Rapid Scan Operations) 4-km resolution <strong>GOES-13<\/strong> &#8212; fire &#8220;hot spots&#8221; <em>(dark black to yellow to red pixels)<\/em> from the large <a href=\"http:\/\/wildfiretoday.com\/2017\/03\/08\/three-fires-near-ok-ks-border-burned-over-800000-acres\/\"><strong>Starbuck Fire<\/strong><\/a> can be seen making a very fast northeastward run from the eastern Oklahoma Panhandle into southwestern Kansas, behind the dryline; later, after the passage of the cold front, the leading edge of that fire and another large Kansas fire turned southward and moved back into Oklahoma. Another large fire in the Texas Panhandle (the <a href=\"http:\/\/wildfiretoday.com\/2017\/03\/08\/three-fires-in-texas-panhandle-have-burned-over-400000-acres\/\"><strong>Perryton Fire<\/strong><\/a>) moved rapidly eastward and crossed the border into Oklahoma (moving a distance of about 45 miles), before also turning abruptly southward in the wake of the aforementioned cold frontal passage. A total of 7 deaths resulted from these fires (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/03\/07\/us\/wildfires-texas-deaths\/\"><strong>CNN<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>===== 07 March Update =====<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the following day, the large size of the grass fire burn scars could be seen in comparisons of true-color and false-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images from Terra MODIS (1732 UTC), Suomi NPP VIIRS (1857 UTC) and Aqua MODIS (1912 UTC) images viewed using <a href=\"http:\/\/realearth.ssec.wisc.edu\"><strong>RealEarth<\/strong><\/a><em><strong> (below)<\/strong><\/em>.
