{"id":23056,"date":"2017-02-07T19:41:51","date_gmt":"2017-02-07T19:41:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=23056"},"modified":"2017-02-13T13:29:24","modified_gmt":"2017-02-13T13:29:24","slug":"goes-16-views-of-tornadic-thunderstorms-over-louisiana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/23056","title":{"rendered":"GOES-16 Views of Tornadic Thunderstorms over Louisiana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/climo\/reports\/170207_rpts.html\">Severe Weather hit Louisiana<\/a> on Tuesday<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20170207.html\"> 7 February 2017<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/spacesegment\/abi.html\">ABI<\/a> on GOES-16 viewed the convective development. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/content\/goes-16-watches-tornadic-storms-hit-louisiana-february-2017\">This website<\/a> includes an animation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yqLBmaJeG-E\">also available on YouTube<\/a>) of the visible imagery (Band 2, 0.64 \u00b5m with 0.5-km resolution at the subsatellite point) from ABI during the time period of the strongest tornadoes in and near New Orleans.  Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ELT3axpZiV8\">here<\/a> for an animation that includes views of all 16 ABI Bands.<\/p>\n<p>A comparison of GOES-13<em> (GOES-East)<\/em> Visible (0.63 \u00b5m) and Infrared Window (10.7 \u00b5m) images is shown below, with hourly surface reports and locations of the tornado reports.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/02\/170207_goes13_visible_infrared_LA_tornadoes_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/02\/480x1280_AGOES13_B14_GOES13_VIS_IR_LA_TORNADO_SPC_07FEB2017_2017038_171500_0002PANELS.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-13 0.63 \u00b5m Visible (top) and 10.7 \u00b5m Infrared Window images (bottom), with hourly surface reports and locations of the tornado reports.\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 0.63 \u00b5m Visible (top) and 10.7 \u00b5m Infrared Window images (bottom), with hourly surface reports in yellow and locations of the tornado reports in cyan.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Suomi NPP overflew the convection shortly after the tornadoes were on the ground in Louisiana, and images from the three spectral bands shown below, <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/02\/viirs_ir-20170207_192443.png\">11.45 \u00b5m<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/02\/viirs_vis-20170207_192443.png\">0.64 \u00b5m<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/02\/viirs_snow_ice-20170207_192443.png\">1.61 \u00b5m<\/a> show a mature convective system with overshooting tops over the Gulf Coast states and the Gulf of Mexico.
