QuickTime animations of <a title=\"MTSAT-1R wikipedia entry\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MTSAT\"><strong>MTSAT-1R<\/strong><\/a> visible channel <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> and 10.7\u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>  did not show any typical severe convection signatures such as an &#8220;enhanced-v&#8221; signature, but these images were only available at 30 minute intervals. Widespread convection was developing over that region in advance of an approaching <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"surface analysis\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/11\/061107_06z_sfc_analysis.jpg\"><strong>mid-latitude cyclone<\/strong><\/a> that was rapidly intensifying &#8212; water vapor channel imagery (<a title=\"MTSAT water vapor images (QuickTime animation)\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/misc\/blog\/061107_mtsat_wv.mov\"><em><strong>QuickTime animation<\/strong><\/em><\/a>) indicated that the <a title=\"MTSAT water vapor image + 400hPa streamlines\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/11\/061107_mtsat_wv_400winds.GIF\"><strong>upper level flow<\/strong><\/a> was strongly <a title=\"water vapor divergence\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/11\/061107_03z_wv_divergence.gif\"><strong>divergent<\/strong><\/a> over Hokkaido island, creating an environment favorable to supporting upward vertical motions and subsequent convective development.<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" title=\"MTSAT IR images (QuickTime animation)\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/misc\/blog\/061107_mtsat_ir.mov\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"362\" align=\"middle\" title=\"MTSAT IR images (QuickTime animation)\" id=\"image223\" alt=\"MTSAT IR images (QuickTime animation)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/11\/061107_mtsat_ir_5.GIF\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Japan&#8217;s deadliest tornado on record struck the town of Saroma (near the northern coast of the island of Hokkaido) around 04:00 UTC (1 PM local time) on 07 November 2006 (CNN news report).
