Over water, the algorithm currently uses data from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> the <a title=\"SSM\/I\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ncdc.noaa.gov\/oa\/satellite\/ssmi\/ssmiproducts.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>SSM\/I<\/strong><\/a> instrument <em>(on the DMSP F13 satellite)<br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li>the <a title=\"AMSU\" href=\"http:\/\/www2.ncdc.noaa.gov\/docs\/klm\/html\/c3\/sec3-3.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>AMSU<\/strong><\/a> instrument <em>(on the NOAA-15, NOAA-16, NOAA-17, NOAA-18, and MetOp-A satellites)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>and over land, the algorithm uses data from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the\u00c2\u00a0 <a title=\"GOES Sounder\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/sounder_tutorial\/g8.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>GOES Sounder<\/strong><\/a> instrument <em>(on the GOES-11 and GOES-12 satellites)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>ground-based Global Positioning System (<a title=\"GPS-MET\" href=\"http:\/\/gpsmet.noaa.gov\/jsp\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>GPS-MET<\/strong><\/a>) receivers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On AWIPS, the Blended TPW product is generated using the <strong>latest data source<\/strong> available for each pixel; it is\u00c2\u00a0 then\u00c2\u00a0 mapped to a Mercator projection with a spatial resolution of 16 km at the Equator. The products are available in AWIPS on a varying schedule, but in general there will be 1 or 2 Blended TPW images per hour.<\/p>\n<p>The Percent of Normal TPW\u00c2\u00a0 (or &#8220;Blended TPW Anomaly&#8221;) product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> compares the current Blended TPW values to the mean values derived during the 1988-1999 time period <em>(using a climatology of SSM\/I TPW over oceans, and a mix of rawinsonde and TOVS sounding TPW over land)<\/em>. Note that while the raw TPW Anomaly product is capable of calculating\u00c2\u00a0 values in excess of 200%, on AWIPS all of the TPW Anomaly values\u00c2\u00a0 greater than 200% are simply colored yellow <em>(and displayed as &#8220;&gt; 201&#8221; using AWIPS cursor sampling)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/03\/Precip_H2O_Plot_20090319_1200.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Percent of Normal TPW (TPW Anomaly)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/03\/Precip_H2O_Plot_20090319_1200.png\" alt=\"Blended TPW Percent of Normal (TPW Anomaly)\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Percent of Normal TPW (TPW Anomaly)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A 4-panel comparison of Blended, GOES Sounder, DMSP SSM\/I, and POES AMSU TPW products <em><strong>(below, <\/strong>using a different <strong><a title=\"CIMSS TPW enhancement\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/visit\/sounder_enhancements.html\" target=\"_blank\">CIMSS TPW enhancement<\/a>) <\/strong><\/em>demonstrates some of the advantages of the blended TPW product, namely <strong>(1)<\/strong> no gaps between the individual swaths of polar-orbiting satellite data over water, and <strong>(2)<\/strong> the availability of TPW data in areas of dense cloud cover <em>(over both land and water)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/03\/tpw_4panel_anim_3.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Comparison on Blended, GOES Sounder, DMSP SSM\/I, and POES AMSU TPW products\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/03\/tpw_4panel_anim_3.gif\" alt=\"Comparison on Blended, GOES Sounder, DMSP SSM\/I, and POES AMSU TPW products\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Comparison of Blended, GOES Sounder, SSM\/I, and AMSU TPW products<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of AWIPS cursor sampling of the Blended, GOES Sounder, DMSP SSM\/I, and POES AMSU TPW products<em><strong> <\/strong><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> shows that in general, the TPW value for any given location should agree to within a few millimeters<em><strong> <\/strong>(or within several hundredths to perhaps one tenth of an inch)<strong>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/03\/tpw_4panel_compare_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Comparison of Blended, GOES sounder, SSM\/I, and AMSU TPW products\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/03\/tpw_4panel_compare_2.jpg\" alt=\"Comparison of Blended, GOES sounder, SSM\/I, and AMSU TPW products\" width=\"480\" height=\"457\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Comparison of Blended, GOES sounder, SSM\/I, and AMSU TPW products<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, at times there may be some disagreement between TPW values at any particular point<em><strong> (below)<\/strong><\/em>, due to temporal differences of the data as displayed in AWIPS.
