{"id":211,"date":"2006-11-01T22:54:06","date_gmt":"2006-11-01T22:54:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2006\/11\/01\/subtropical-disturbance-in-the-north-pacific\/"},"modified":"2007-05-07T04:13:29","modified_gmt":"2007-05-07T04:13:29","slug":"subtropical-disturbance-in-the-north-pacific","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/211","title":{"rendered":"Subtropical cyclone in the North Pacific??"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-11 IR winds\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/11\/061101_12_g11_irwinds.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"479\" height=\"362\" align=\"middle\" title=\"GOES-11 IR winds\" id=\"image212\" alt=\"GOES-11 IR winds\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/11\/061101_12_g11_irwinds.gif\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWhat appeared to be a rather unusual example of a subtropical cyclone was evident over the northern East Pacific Ocean on 01 November  (<strong><a target=\"_blank\" title=\"AWIPS GOES IR + surface analysis\/buoys\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/11\/awips_061101_18z_ir_buoys.jpg\">AWIPS surface analysis + buoys<\/a><\/strong>) &#8212; however, this compact cyclone was likely associated with a deep cold-core cutoff low that had been over that region for a few days  (<strong><a title=\"HPC 500 hPa analyses\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/dwm_500ht_20061101.html\">HPC 500 hPa analyses<\/a><\/strong>). GOES-11 IR cloud drift winds <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic\">(above)<\/span> showed the broad cyclonic flow around the periphery of the surface low (closer view of <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"AWIPS GOES IR + low-level winds\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/11\/awips_061101_20z_winds_lowlevel.jpg\"><strong>AWIPS low-level winds<\/strong><\/a> | <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"AWIPS GOES IR + upper-level winds\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/11\/awips_061101_20z_winds_upperlevel.jpg\"><strong>AWIPS upper-level winds<\/strong><\/a>). GOES-11 visible channel imagery <em>(<\/em><a style=\"font-style: italic\" title=\"GOES-11 visible image animation\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/misc\/blog\/061101_g11_vis.mov\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">QuickTime animation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-style: italic\">)<\/span> showed a cloud structure that almost resembled the eye of a tropical cyclone.<\/p>\n<p>A similar signature was also seen on the GOES-11 10.7\u00c2\u00b5m IR window channel imagery <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic\">(below)<\/span>, with a ring-like feature of cold cloud top temperatures <em>(<\/em><span style=\"font-style: italic\">-50 to -55 C, yellow to orange enhancement<\/span><em>)<\/em> that was very persistent for much of the day <span style=\"font-style: italic\">(<\/span><a title=\"GOES-11 IR image animation\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/misc\/blog\/061101_g11_ir4.mov\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic\">QuickTime animation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-style: italic\">)<\/span>.
