The 6.9 \u00b5m is one of 3 water vapor spectral bands on the Himawari <a href=\"http:\/\/www.data.jma.go.jp\/mscweb\/en\/himawari89\/space_segment\/spsg_ahi.html\"><strong>AHI<\/strong><\/a> instrument &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/\"><strong>GOES-R<\/strong><\/a> will feature 3 nearly identical water vapor bands on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/spacesegment\/abi.html\"><strong>ABI<\/strong><\/a> instrument.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/12\/151211-13_west_pacific_surface_analyses_Bering_Sea_storm_anim.gif\"><strong>surface analyses<\/strong><\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opc.ncep.noaa.gov\/index.php\"><strong>Ocean Prediction Center<\/strong><\/a>, the storm was centered over Japan at 00 UTC on 11 December, and began rapidly intensifying later that day as it continued moving northeastward; it eventually deepened to a minimum central pressure of 924 hPa (27.29 inches of mercury) over the far southern Bering Sea at <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/12\/151213_06z_wpac_sfc.gif\"><strong>06 UTC<\/strong><\/a> on 13 December. This equaled the analyzed minimum central pressure of Post-Tropical Cyclone <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?s=Nuri\"><strong>Nuri<\/strong><\/a> in November 2014, which was one of the strongest storms on record in the Bering Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Corresponding GOES-15 Water Vapor <em>(6.5 \u00b5m, 4-km resolution)<\/em> images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> offered a slightly closer view of the intensifying storm. The unique satellite signature &#8212; resembling a curved scorpion tail &#8212; of a phenomenon known as a <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?s=sting+jet\"><strong>sting jet<\/strong><\/a> was seen to begin developing around <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/12\/960x1280_AGOES15_B3_GOES15_AK_BOMB_2015346_200000_0001PANEL.GIF\"><strong>20 UTC<\/strong><\/a> on 12 December south of the Aleutian Islands. Several hours after the middle-tropospheric sting jet feature on water vapor imagery moved over Adak Island (PADK on the images) around <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/12\/960x1280_AGOES15_B3_GOES15_AK_BOMB_2015347_013000_0001PANEL.GIF\"><strong>0130 UTC<\/strong><\/a>, sustained surface winds of 82 knots (94 mph) with gusts to 106 knots (122 mph) were recorded just after 09 UTC.
