The Suomi NPP VIIRS Day Night Band Imagery (courtesy William Straka, SSEC\/CIMSS), above, from 2102 UTC on 29 October, shows a compact storm with curved bands of strong convection around an apparent eye. A more zoomed-in version of the storm in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/10\/I05_102915_2102_CycChapala_zoom.png\">infrared<\/a> (A Zoomed in version of the Day Night band is <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/10\/DNB_102915_2102_3E-8_CycChapala_zoom.png\">here<\/a>), shows very cold cloud tops.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 530px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/10\/MIMICTPW_ForecastPath_1200_30October.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/10\/MIMICTPW_ForecastPath_1200_30October.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"318\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Total Precipitable Water and Projected Storm Path for Chapala, 1200 UTC on 30 October 2015<\/strong> (Click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Data from the <a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\">CIMSS Tropical Page<\/a> shows the environment in which Chapala strengthened will become progressively less favorable as the storm approaches land. The <a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/mimic-tpw\/indo\/main.html\">MIMIC Total Precipitable Water<\/a>, above, shows the storm with dry air to the north and west. Tropical cyclones that approach the Arabian peninsula are rare. Those that do approach are invariably weakened as they ingest the dry air that is typically over Arabia. <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/10\/WindShear_ForecastPath.gif\">Diagnostics of wind shear<\/a> also suggest that Chapala is moving towards a more highly sheared environment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/mimic-tc\/tc.shtml\">Microwave imagery<\/a>, below, shows a very intense eye around 0100 UTC on 30 October. The warmest brightness temperature warmed 15 K between 1015 UTC and 1345 UTC.<\/p>\n<p>Meteosat-10 viewed the storm as well, and all 11 channels from 0300 to 1500 UTC, including <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/10\/METEOSAT10_12Panel_30Oct2015_0600.gif\">0600<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/10\/METEOSAT10_12Panel_30Oct2015_1200.gif\">1200 UTC<\/a>, are shown below. The water vapor channels, in particular, show the very dry air over the Arabian Peninsula. In addition, the animation shows gradual warming of the coldest cloud tops. <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/10\/M7_IR_28-30Oct_anim.gif\">Data from Meteosat-7<\/a>, (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/data\/geo\/index.php?satellite=met-iodc&amp;file=jpg\">source<\/a>) viewing the Indian Ocean, shows the rapid intensification of this small storm. The toggle below shows Meteosat-7 imagery of the two storms near their respective peak intensities (Chapala&#8217;s intensity plot with time is shown <a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/satcon\/201504A.gif\">here<\/a>).
