{"id":1970,"date":"2009-02-08T23:07:16","date_gmt":"2009-02-08T23:07:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=1970"},"modified":"2009-02-10T22:32:48","modified_gmt":"2009-02-10T22:32:48","slug":"melting-snow-and-thinning-ice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/1970","title":{"rendered":"Melting snow and thinning ice"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/02\/090208_modis_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS true color and false color images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/02\/090208_modis_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS true color and false color images\" width=\"480\" height=\"323\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true color and false color images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a title=\"NWS Milwaukee\/Sullivan WI\" href=\"http:\/\/www.crh.noaa.gov\/mkx\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>National Weather Service at Milwaukee\/Sullivan<\/strong><\/a> posted a nice <a title=\"MODIS true color imagery (NWS Milwaukee)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.crh.noaa.gov\/news\/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=mkx&amp;storyid=21790&amp;source=0\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>animation of MODIS true color imagery<\/strong><\/a> <em>(using the\u00c2\u00a0 AWIPS &#8220;MODIS True Color Imagery Viewer&#8221; that Jordan Gerth developed as part of the CIMSS\/SSEC <a title=\"MODIS in AWIPS project\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/~jordang\/awips-modis\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>MODIS in D2D project<\/strong><\/a>) <\/em>which<em> <\/em>shows the breakup of ice in southern Lake Michigan and the melting of snow cover over far southeastern Wisconsin during a 3-day period of warm temperatures in early February 2009. A comparison of MODIS  &#8220;true color&#8221; <em>(Red\/Green\/Blue composite using channels 01\/04\/03)<\/em> and &#8220;false color&#8221; <em>(Red\/Green\/Blue composite using channels 07\/02\/01)<\/em> images from the <a title=\"SSEC MODIS Today site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=a1&amp;product=true_color&amp;date=2009_02_08_039\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>SSEC MODIS Today<\/strong><\/a> site<em><strong> (above)<\/strong><\/em> also showed some interesting clues about the thinning of the ice on some of the inland lakes and rivers on <a title=\"08 February 2009 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20090208.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>08 February 2008<\/strong><\/a>. Snow and ice appear as white features on the true color image, but appear as varying shades of cyan on the false color image &#8212; however, thinner ice shows up as a <em>darker blue<\/em> color on the false color image <em>(due in part to a higher meltwater content within\u00c2\u00a0 the top layer of the ice)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the appearance of the inland lake ice was beginning to show signs of degradation and thinning\u00c2\u00a0 on the MODIS imagery, recent reports of ice thickness <em>(<strong>below,<\/strong> courtesy of <a title=\"Lake-Link.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lake-link.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Lake-Link.com<\/strong><\/a>)<\/em> indicated that there was still over 20 inches of ice on some parts of the larger lakes such as Lake Winnebago <em>(the largest lake in east-central Wisconsin)<\/em>, as well as on smaller lakes like Lake Mendota <em>(the largest of the lakes in the Madison area)<\/em>. Note that some of the lakes in southern Wisconsin are already ice-free &#8212; these lakes exhibit a darker appearance on both the true color and the false color images.
