The toggle above shows Suomi NPP VIIRS<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/09\/SNPP_1145_0629_29September2015.png\"> 11.45 \u00b5m Infrared imagery<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/09\/SNPP_DNB_0p7_0629_29September2015.png\">Day\/Night Band 0.70 \u00b5m visible imagery<\/a> (illuminated by a near-Full moon) at 0642 UTC or 1:42 am local time on 29 September. The presence of <strong>northerly<\/strong> deep-layer wind shear (image below from the CIMSS Tropical Cyclones site; animation of <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/09\/150929_goes13_ir_shear_Joaquin_anim.gif\">GOES-13 IR images<\/a>) causes the strongest convection to be displaced to the <strong>south<\/strong> of the surface circulation, and a small cloud swirl (the low-level circulation center of Joaquin: <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/09\/150929_0642utc_suomi_npp_viirs_dnb_surface_analysis.png\">magnified image<\/a>) is apparent in the night-time visible imagery near 26.7\u00ba N, 70.3\u00ba W, northwest of the strongest convection.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/09\/WindShear1500UTC_29Sept2015.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/09\/WindShear1500UTC_29Sept2015.gif\" alt=\"850-200 hPa Wind Shear Analysis, 1500 UTC 29 September 2015 [click to enlarge]\" width=\"480\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>850-200 hPa Wind Shear Analysis, 1500 UTC 29 September 2015<\/strong> [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Analyses of Total Precipitable Water, below, from <a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/mimic-tpw\/natl\/main.html\">Morphed Microwave Data<\/a>, show the storm forming in an environment rich in moisture. Note also the generous moisture amounts in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. Joaquin is forecast to move northward off the East Coast of the United States. The slow increase in organization, symmetry and high cold cloud tops is apparent.
