These plumes  likely originated at large <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"MN power plants\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/10\/mn_power_plants.jpg\"><strong>coal-fired power plants<\/strong><\/a> (or paper mills?) located across that region &#8212; emissions from these industrial sources may have acted as cloud condensation nuclei, causing a higher concentration of <em>smaller<\/em> supercooled cloud droplets downwind of the plants.<\/p>\n<p>The MODIS Cloud Phase product <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic\">(below, lower left panel)<\/span> showed that this stratus deck was primarily a water-phase cloud (blue enhancement); MODIS <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"MODIS 11.0\u00c2\u00b5m IR image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/10\/061019_modis_stratus_plumes_ch31.jpg\"><strong>11.0\u00c2\u00b5m IR window channel brightness temperatures<\/strong><\/a> were generally around -14 C across that region, indicating that the stratus cloud was composed of supercooled water droplets. Note that these power plant plumes were <em>not<\/em> evident on the 4 km resolution GOES fog\/stratus product <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic\">(below, upper right panel)<\/span>.
