{"id":184,"date":"2006-10-15T23:40:34","date_gmt":"2006-10-15T23:40:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2006\/10\/16\/cold-cloud-top-temperatures\/"},"modified":"2006-10-17T13:41:23","modified_gmt":"2006-10-17T13:41:23","slug":"cold-cloud-top-temperatures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/184","title":{"rendered":"Cold cloud top temperatures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" title=\"AWIPS MODIS + GOES IR images\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/10\/061015_modis_goes_ir_19z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"479\" height=\"229\" align=\"middle\" title=\"AWIPS MODIS + GOES IR images\" id=\"image182\" alt=\"AWIPS MODIS + GOES IR images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/10\/061015_modis_goes_ir_19z.jpg\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nA large Mesoscale Convective System formed over the Gulf of Mexico (just off the Texas coast) on <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"15 October daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20061015.html\"><strong>15 October<\/strong><\/a>, and this convection exhibited some very cold cloud top temperatures on AWIPS images of IR window channel data <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> &#8212; IR brightness temperatures were as cold as <strong>-91 C<\/strong> (-132 F) on the <a title=\"AWIPS MODIS IR image\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/10\/061015_modis_ir_19z.jpg\"><strong>1-km resolution 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m MODIS IR channel<\/strong><\/a>, and as cold as <strong>-87  C<\/strong> (-125 F) on the <a title=\"GOES IR image\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/10\/061015_goes_ir_16z.jpg\"><strong>4-km resolution GOES IR channel<\/strong><\/a>. Such cold cloud top temperatures are common in a tropical atmosphere, where the <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES IR with tropopause pressure\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/10\/061015_18_trop_pressure1.jpg\"><strong>tropopause pressures<\/strong><\/a> are usually lower and the tropopause temperatures colder than atmospheres at mid-latitudes; the <a title=\"Brownsville TX rawinsone reports\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/10\/061015_kbro_raobs1.GIF\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold\">rawinsonde reports from Brownsville, Texas<\/span><\/a>  indicated a tropopause near the 100 mb level, with a nearly moist adiabatic lapse rate that is also typical of tropical air masses.<\/p>\n<p>GOES sounder <a title=\"GOES sounder PW\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/10\/061015_12_850winds_pw.jpg\"><strong>total precipitable water<\/strong><\/a> values were also quite high across the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, with PW exceeding 60 mm (2.4 inches) at some locations <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic\">(below)<\/span>.
