This bore feature was located in the area where strong westerly to southwesterly mid-tropospheric winds were impinging upon a consolidating dryline &#8212; this dryline later moved eastward and acted as the focus for severe thunderstorms across Texas (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/climo\/reports\/150516_rpts.html\"><strong>SPC storm reports<\/strong><\/a>). GOES-14 had been activated to perform Super Rapid Scan Operations for GOES-R (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/srsor2015\/GOES-14_SRSOR.html\"><strong>SRSOR<\/strong><\/a>) duties beginning on 18 May.<\/p>\n<p>Note that there were no parallel cloud rolls present on the corresponding GOES-15\/14\/13 0.63 \u00b5m visible channel imagery <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> &#8212; so this gravity wave bore feature was forming in clear air.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/05\/150516_1330z_goes15_goes14_goes13_visible_water_vapor_NM_TX_bore_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/05\/150516_1330z_goes15_goes14_goes13_visible_water_vapor_NM_TX_bore_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-15 (left), GOES-14 (center), and GOES-13 (right) 0.63 \u00b5m visible and 6.5 \u00b5m water vapor channel images\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-15 (left), GOES-14 (center), and GOES-13 (right) 0.63 \u00b5m visible and 6.5 \u00b5m water vapor channel images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of 12 UTC El Paso, Texas <em>(yellow)<\/em> and Midland, Texas <em>(cyan)<\/em> rawinsonde data <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the differences in vertical moisture profile to the west and to the east of the bore feature &#8212; especially in the 500-600 hPa layer, where a good deal of the signal contributing to the overall water vapor brightness temperature was originating from.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/05\/150516_12Z_EPZ_MAF_RAOBS_SKEWT.GIF\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/05\/150516_12Z_EPZ_MAF_RAOBS_SKEWT.GIF\" alt=\"El Paso and Midland, Texas rawinsonde data profiles\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">El Paso and Midland, Texas rawinsonde data profiles<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An elongated north-to-south oriented atmospheric bore was observed on GOES-15 (GOES-West), GOES-14, and GOES-13 (GOES-East) 6.5 \u00b5m water vapor channel images (above; click to play animation; also available as an MP4 movie file) on the morning of 16 May 2015.
