The image above is the VIIRS 11.45 \u00b5m infrared imagery (click <a href=\"http:\/\/ga2.cira.colostate.edu\/Lindsey\/viirs_I-band5_23apr15_0513Z_Calbuco_ann2.png\">here<\/a> for a similar view).<\/p>\n<p>The shock of the volcanic eruption generated mesospheric gravity waves (or &#8220;mesospheric airglow waves&#8221;) that were evident in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/04\/DNB_04315_0509_5E-10_Calbuco_VolGW.png\">Day\/Night Band<\/a>, shown in the toggle below between the 11.45 \u00b5m and the night-time visible imagery.
