From 16:00 to 18:00 UTC, the test was conducted for the &#8220;Sitka&#8221; sector <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> &#8212; and GOES-15 0.63 \u00b5m visible channel images over a portion of that sector <em><strong>(below; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> showed the circulation of a mid-latitude cyclone that was producing gale force winds in the eastern portion of the Gulf of Alaska (<a title=\"IR image with surface analysis\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/03\/NA_IR_Sat_20150317_2015.png\"><strong>IR image with surface analysis<\/strong><\/a>), as well as clusters of deep convection which were forming along an occluded front approaching from the south.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/03\/150317_goes15_visible_Sitka_sector_rso_test_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/03\/150317_G15_VIS_SITKA_RSO_TEST_17.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-15 0.63 \u00b5m visible images - \" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-15 0.63 \u00b5m visible images &#8211; &#8220;Sitka&#8221; sector (click to play animation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ospo.noaa.gov\/Operations\/GOES\/west\/RSOtest_TPARC-img.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ospo.noaa.gov\/Operations\/GOES\/west\/gfx\/RSO_TPARC_135W-iv.png\" alt=\"GOES-15 \" width=\"480\" height=\"432\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-15 &#8220;TPARC&#8221; RSO sector<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Then from 18:00 to 20:00 UTC, the RSO test was conducted for the &#8220;<a title=\"TPARC\" href=\"http:\/\/met.nps.edu\/~tparc\/\"><strong>TPARC<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; sector <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> &#8212; and GOES-15 0.63 \u00b5m visible channel images <em><strong>(below; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> showed the circulation of two cyclones south of the Aleutian Islands, in addition to a large &#8220;banner cloud&#8221; and a few mountain waves which had formed downwind <em>(to the north)<\/em> of the rugged terrain of the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands. GOES-15 IR brightness temperatures associated with the banner cloud were as cold as -65 C, which according to the nearby Bethel, Alaska rawinsonde data at 12 UTC corresponded to an altitude of around 27,700 feet (<a title=\"IR image with Bethel Skew-T and surface analysis\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/03\/150317_2015z_goes15_ir_surface_analysis_skewt_AK.png\"><strong>IR image with Bethel Skew-T and surface analysis<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/03\/150317_goes15_visible_TPARC_sector_rso_test_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/03\/150317_G15_VIS_TPARC_RSO_TEST_14.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-15 0.63 \u00b5m visible channel images - \" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-15 0.63 \u00b5m visible channel images &#8211; &#8220;TPARC&#8221; sector (click to play animation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Regarding the Alaska Peninsula banner cloud seen on the GOES-15 visible images, a sequence of Terra\/Aqua MODIS 11.0 \u00b5m and Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00b5m IR images <strong><em>(below; click image to play animation)<\/em><\/strong> showed the evolution of this feature several hours before and after the RSO test.
