On <a title=\"03 March 2015 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20150303.html\"><strong>03 March<\/strong><\/a>, a northeastward surge of moisture ahead of an approaching strong arctic cold front produced areas of light snow, freezing rain, freezing drizzle, and fog across parts of southeastern Minnesota, eastern Iowa, southern and central Wisconsin, and northern Illinois &#8212; and farther to the south from northeastern Missouri into central Illinois it was warm enough for rain as the precipitation type. This precipitation fell onto a pre-existing snow cover (<a title=\"NOHRSC 03 March snow depth\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nohrsc.noaa.gov\/interactive\/html\/map.html?ql=station&amp;zoom=&amp;loc=44.685+N%2C+95.140+W&amp;var=ssm_depth&amp;dy=2015&amp;dm=3&amp;dd=3&amp;dh=12&amp;snap=1&amp;o9=1&amp;o12=1&amp;o13=1&amp;lbl=m&amp;mode=pan&amp;extents=us&amp;min_x=-95.241666666668&amp;min_y=36.224999999996&amp;max_x=-86.433333333335&amp;max_y=45.033333333329&amp;coord_x=-90.8375000000015&amp;coord_y=40.6291666666625&amp;zbox_n=&amp;zbox_s=&amp;zbox_e=&amp;zbox_w=&amp;metric=0&amp;bgvar=dem&amp;shdvar=shading&amp;width=1000&amp;height=1000&amp;nw=1000&amp;nh=1000&amp;h_o=0&amp;font=0&amp;js=1&amp;uc=0\"><strong>NOHRSC 03 March snow depth<\/strong><\/a>), making the skin of the snow cover icy and\/or wet (depending on the air temperature); with the passage of the strong arctic cold front,\u00a0 this icy and\/or wet snow surface quickly froze, creating a large area of ice-glazed snow cover.<\/p>\n<p>At the 1.61 \u00b5m wavelength, since ice is a stronger absorber of radiation than snow, the ice-glazed snow areas appeared darker black compared to the surrounding snow cover;
