Instability-like fragmentation of a <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES water vapor + PV\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/10\/061013_goes_wv_pv_1.jpg\"><strong>potential vorticity (PV) strip<\/strong><\/a> along a stratospheric intrusion can lead to the development of this type of isolated  subvortex structure <em>(<\/em><a title=\"Wirth et al., 1997\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/ams.allenpress.com\/perlserv\/?request=get-document&#038;doi=10.1175%2F1520-0493(1997)125%3C2504:SOIVAM%3E2.0.CO%3B2\"><em>see Wirth et al, 1997<\/em><\/a><em>)<\/em>. Within these mesoscale vortices, the  tropopause was likely displaced downward several kilometers as vertical winds induced by local  stratospheric intrusions brought drier air into the upper troposphere. AWIPS imagery of GOES sounder total column ozone  <em><strong>(QuickTime animation, below)<\/strong><\/em> showed  elevated ozone values (350-375 Dobson Units, green enhancement) co-located with the dry vortex signatures &#8212; elevated ozone is another signature of stratospheric air. Note that these vortices were forming in cloud-free air <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"MODIS + GOES 4 panel image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/10\/061013_goes_4panel.jpg\"><strong>(GOES-12 4 panel image)<\/strong><\/a>.<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES ozone + water vapor animation\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/misc\/blog\/061013_g12_wv_ozone.mov\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"479\" height=\"230\" align=\"middle\" title=\"GOES ozone + water vapor animation\" id=\"image177\" alt=\"GOES ozone + water vapor animation\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/10\/061013_goes_ozone_wv_5.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel imagery (QuickTime animation, above) revealed a series of vortices migrating southward along the western periphery of the large cold-core polar vortex that was centered over\u00c2\u00a0 southern Ontario on 13 September.
