With a cloud-free sky and light winds under a dome of high pressure, strong radiational cooling over a deep snowpack<\/strong><\/a> allowed the overnight low temperature<\/strong><\/a> to drop to -47\u00ba F (-43.9\u00ba C) at Wabush Lake (station identifier CYWK<\/strong><\/a>)<\/em> in far western Labrador — this was quite possibly the coldest site in North America on 22 January 2015<\/strong><\/a> (the coldest overnight low temperature in Alaska that morning was -39\u00ba F or -39.4\u00ba C at Galena). AWIPS images of Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00b5m IR channel data (above)<\/strong><\/em> and MODIS 11.0 \u00b5m IR channel data (below)<\/strong><\/em> showed minimum surface IR brightness temperatures of -47\u00ba C or -52.6\u00ba F (darker blue color enhancement)<\/em> in the western Labrador.<\/p>\n

A comparison of 1-km resolution Soumi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00b5m and 4-km resolution GOES-13 10.7 \u00b5m IR images (below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the advantage of higher spatial resolution for more accurately locating the coldest regions.<\/p>\n
