The highest wind gust seen was 64 knots at the <a title=\"plot of Gullfax Platform weather conditions\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/01\/150102-03_ENGC_SFCMG.GIF\"><strong>Gullfax Platform<\/strong><\/a> (<a title=\"Water vapor image with surface station locations\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/01\/150102_16z_water_vapor_image_surface_observations.png\"><strong>ENGC<\/strong><\/a>) in the North Sea at 16 UTC, with a wind gust to 63 knots at <a title=\"plot of Oslo Fornebu weather conditions\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/01\/150102-03_ENFB_SFCMG.GIF\"><strong>Oslo Fornebu<\/strong><\/a> airport (<a title=\"Water vapor image with surface station locations\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/01\/150102_16z_water_vapor_image_surface_observations.png\"><strong>ENFB<\/strong><\/a>) at 21 UTC; in the morning hours, an aircraft was blown off the runway at Stornoway Airport, Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland (<a title=\"Water vapor image with surface station locations\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/01\/150102_16z_water_vapor_image_surface_observations.png\"><strong>EGPO<\/strong><\/a>).\u00a0Ferry services between Kristiansand and Denmark as well as those between Sandefjord and Sweden were cancelled due to the strong winds. <strong><a title=\"EUMETSAT\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eumetsat.int\/website\/home\/index.html\">EUMETSAT<\/a> Meteosat-10<\/strong> 6.25 \u00b5m water vapor channel images <em><strong>(above; click image to play animation; also available as an <a title=\"MP4 movie file\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2015\/01\/150102-03_meteosat10_water_vapor_norway_winds_anim.mp4\">MP4 movie file<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> showed that most of the stronger wind gusts occurred beneath a ribbon of drier air aloft, in which instability rain\/snow showers (and even thunderstorms) were developing.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>Suomi NPP<\/strong> VIIRS true-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) image at 10:57 UTC visualized using the <a title=\"SSEC RealEarth web map server\" href=\"http:\/\/wms.ssec.wisc.edu\"><strong>SSEC RealEarth<\/strong><\/a> web map server <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed a more detailed view of the instability showers and thunderstorms as they were developing over the North Sea.
