These features are formed when an aircraft penetrates a supercooled cloud layer &#8212; the particles in the exhaust act as ice nuclei which allow the supercooled water droplets to transform into ice crystals.<\/p>\n<p>A comparison of 250-meter resolution Terra MODIS True Color and False Color Red-Green-Blue (RGB) images from the <a title=\"SSEC MODIS Today site\" href=\"http:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=t1&amp;product=true_color&amp;date=2014_12_12_346&amp;overlay_sector=false&amp;overlay_state=true&amp;overlay_coastline=true\"><strong>SSEC MODIS Today<\/strong><\/a> site<em><strong> (below)<\/strong><\/em> confirmed that the clouds within the dissipation trails and hole punch features had glaciated &#8212; ice crystal clouds appear as shades of cyan in the False Color image, in contrast to supercooled water droplet clouds which appear as varying shades of white.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 652px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/12\/141212_1607z_modis_truecolor_falsecolor_distrails_FL_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/12\/141212_1607z_modis_truecolor_falsecolor_distrails_FL_anim.gif\" alt=\"Terra MODIS true-color and false-color images\" width=\"642\" height=\"452\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Terra MODIS True Color and False Color images [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>McIDAS images of 1-km resolution GOES-13 Visible (0.63 \u00b5m) data (above ) revealed numerous aircraft dissipation trails and &#8220;hole punch clouds&#8221; which formed over southern Florida and the adjacent waters of the Atlantic Ocean on 12 December 2014.
