As has been noted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crh.noaa.gov\/news\/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=mkx&amp;storyid=103325&amp;source=0\">elsewhere<\/a>, lake water temperatures are running significantly below normal: pockets of surface water in the 30s F (darker blue color enhancement) persist in Lakes Michigan and Lake Huron, and much of Lake Superior still has surface water temperatures in the 30s to near 40\u00b0F.<\/p>\n<p>Over the Lake Michigan area, <a title=\"GOES-13 visible images with RTMA surface winds and surface pressue analyses\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/07\/140710_goes13_visible_rtma_winds_surface_pressure_anim.gif\">high pressure with light winds<\/a> in tandem with the thermal contrast between the cold waters (<a title=\"closer view of VIIRS SST product over Lake Michigan\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/07\/VIIRS_SST_20140710_1733.png\">closer view<\/a>) and the rapidly-warming land surfaces led to the generation of a well-defined lake breeze, which could be seen on GOES-13 0.63 \u00b5m visible channel images (below; click image to play animation; also available as an <a title=\"MP4 movie file\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/07\/140710_goes13_visible_lake_michigan_lake_breeze_anim.mp4\">MP4 movie file<\/a>). Early in the animation, note the formation of a thin patch of fog\/stratus over the area of colder waters in northern Lake Michigan, as southeasterly\/southerly winds advected warmer air over the cold water (<a title=\"MODIS visible image and Sea Surface Temperature (SST) product comparison\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/07\/140710_1619z_modis_visible_rtma_winds_sst_Lake_Michigan_anim.gif\">MODIS visible\/SST image comparison<\/a>).
