Over the Lower 48 states, the leading edge of the smoke made it as far south as Iowa and northern Illinois. The bulk of the dense smoke was aloft, but at the surface the visibility was reduced to 3-5 miles at some locations in North Dakota.<\/p>\n<p>The above example serves as a<span class=\"userContent\"> good demonstration of the principle of &#8220;forward scattering&#8221;: the smoke was more evident on visible imagery from GOES-15\u00a0 early in the day (as the sun was rising), and more evident on visible imagery from GOES-13 later in the day (as the sun was setting).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Suomi NPP VIIRS true-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images from the<a title=\"SSEC RealEarth web map server\" href=\"http:\/\/wms.ssec.wisc.edu\/\"><strong> SSEC RealEarth<\/strong><\/a> web map server<em><strong> (below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the areal coverage of the hazy pall of smoke on <a title=\"06 July 2014 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20140706.html\"><strong>06 July<\/strong><\/a>, <a title=\"07 July 2014 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20140707.html\"><strong>07 July<\/strong><\/a>, and <a title=\"08 July 2014 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20140708.html\"><strong>08 July<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/07\/140706-08_suomi_npp_viirs_truecolor_canadian_wildfire_smoke_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/07\/140706-08_suomi_npp_viirs_truecolor_canadian_wildfire_smoke_anim.gif\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS true-color images\" width=\"480\" height=\"420\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS true-color images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The<a title=\"IDEA-I\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/idea-i\/USaerosol\/\"><strong> IDEA-I<\/strong><\/a> forward airmass trajectory model applied to targets of high Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) which were detected by the Terra MODIS instrument over Canada on 08 July are shown below.
