McIDAS images of GOES-15 0.63 \u00b5m visible channel data <em><strong>(above; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> showed a number of smoke plumes streaming off the coast during the day. Note the brief appearance of a cluster of bright white pixels on the <a title=\"18:00 UTC image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/05\/140514_G15_VIS_SOCAL_FIRES_17.GIF\"><strong>18:00 UTC image<\/strong><\/a>, just north of the California\/Baja California border &#8212; this a signal of sunlight being reflected off of large solar panel arrays in that area.<\/p>\n<p>The side-by-side comparison of GOES-15 <em>(GOES-West)<\/em> and GOES-13 <em>(GOES-East)<\/em> 0.63 \u00b5m visible channel images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed that with a lowering sun angle at the end of the day, the smoke plumes began to become more difficult to identify on GOES-15 images <em>(left);<\/em> on the other hand, thanks to the benefit of a favorable forward scattering angle, the areal coverage of the smoke plumes stood out very well on GOES-13 images <em>(right)<\/em>. The enhancements are the same on both sets of images.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/05\/140515_g15_g13_vis_SoCal_fires_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/05\/140515_g15_g13_vis_SoCal_fires_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-15 (left) and GOES-13 (right) 0.63 \u00b5m visible channel images\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-15 (left) and GOES-13 (right) 0.63 \u00b5m visible channel images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A 375-meter resolution Suomi NPP VIIRS true-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) image visualized using the <a title=\"SSEC RealEarth web map server\" href=\"http:\/\/wms.ssec.wisc.edu\/\"><strong>SSEC RealEarth<\/strong><\/a> web map server <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed these smoke plumes with great clarity at 20:25 UTC or 1:25 PM local time.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/05\/140514_2025z_suomi_npp_viirs_truecolor_SoCal_fires.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/05\/140514_2025z_suomi_npp_viirs_truecolor_SoCal_fires.jpg\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS true-color RGB image\" width=\"480\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS true-color RGB image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As the larger fires continued to burn into the subsequent overnight hours, their hot thermal signature could be detected on AWIPS images of 4-km resolution GOES-15 3.9 \u00b5m shortwave IR channel data <em><strong>(below; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/05\/140515_goes15_swir_SoCal_fires_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/05\/US_3.9u_Sat_20140515_0840.png\" alt=\"GOES-15 3.9 \u00b5m shortwave IR images (click to play animation)\" width=\"480\" height=\"390\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-15 3.9 \u00b5m shortwave IR images (click to play animation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A nighttime comparison of a 375-meter resolution Suomi NPP VIIRS 3.74 \u00b5m shortwave IR image with the corresponding 750-meter resolution VIIRS Day\/Night Band image <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed a prominent fire hot spot <em>(yellow to red pixels)<\/em> on the shortwave IR image between San Diego (KSAN) and Camp Pendleton (KNFG), along with light gray signature of the narrow, fresh smoke plume that was being blown off the coast from that fire on the Day\/Night Band image. At the time of the image, smoke was restricting the surface visibility to 5 miles at Camp Pendleton. Farther offshore, reflected moonlight was helping to show the location of smoke that had spread out over the adjacent waters of the Pacific Ocean from the previous day of burning.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/05\/140515_0837z_suomi_npp_viirs_swir_dnb_SoCal_fires_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/05\/140515_0837z_suomi_npp_viirs_swir_dnb_SoCal_fires_anim.gif\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 3.74 \u00b5m shortwave IR and 0.7 \u00b5m Day\/Night Band images\" width=\"480\" height=\"390\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS 3.74 \u00b5m shortwave IR and 0.7 \u00b5m Day\/Night Band images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Finally, a demonstration of the importance of higher spatial resolution for accurate fire hot spot detection: on the comparison of 375-meter resolution Suomi NPP VIIRS 3.74 \u00b5m and 4-km resolution GOES-15 3.9 \u00b5m shortwave IR images <em><strong>(below),<\/strong><\/em> note that although the size of the fire &#8220;hot spot&#8221; was smaller on the VIIRS image, the highest IR brightness temperature was 54.5\u00ba C (compared to 48.0\u00ba C on the GOES-15 image).
