One area of severe thunderstorms began to develop over the South Dakota\/Nebraska\/Minnesota\/Iowa region, as see on McIDAS images of 1-minute interval GOES-14 0.63 \u00b5m visible channel data <em><strong>(above; click image to play animation; also available as an <a title=\"MP4 file\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/05\/140508_g14_vis_srsor_SD_NE_MN_IA_anim.mp4\">MP4 file<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>An AWIPS image of GOES-13 0.63 \u00b5m visible channel data at 15:15 UTC with overlays of METAR surface observations and fronts\/pressure analysis <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed that a well-defined warm frontal boundary was in place across the region at 15 UTC, which helped to act as a focus for convective development as it moved northward during the morning and afternoon hours. The <a title=\"Storm Prediction Center\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/\"><strong>Storm Prediction Center<\/strong><\/a> had outlined a <a title=\"Moderate Risk outlook\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/05\/140508_1630z_spc_day1otlk.gif\"><strong>Moderate Risk<\/strong><\/a> for severe thunderstorms over this area, and later issued a <a title=\"Tornado Watch #130\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/products\/watch\/ww0130.html\"><strong>Tornado Watch<\/strong><\/a> at 17:50 UTC.
