Ice also remains in eastern Lake Erie, over northeastern Lake Michigan, and in parts of Lake Huron. Lake Ontario and Lake St. Clair are ice-free.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/04\/140415-16_suomi_npp_viirs_dnb_lake_superior_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Daytime VIIRS DNB image (19:23 UTC on 15 April) and Nighttime VIIRS DNB image (07:40 UTC on 16 April)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/04\/140415-16_suomi_npp_viirs_dnb_lake_superior_anim.gif\" width=\"479\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daytime VIIRS DNB image (19:23 UTC on 15 April) and Nighttime VIIRS DNB image (07:40 UTC on 16 April)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Taking a closer look at Lake Superior (above), it is interesting to compare the previous <em>daytime<\/em> VIIRS DNB image (at 19:23 UTC on 15 April) with the subsequent <em>nighttime<\/em> DNB image about 17 hours later (at 07:40 UTC on 16 April):<\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00c2\u00a0 You can ascertain changes in the ice motion and areal coverage, even at night<\/p>\n<p>(2) The later 16 April image showed that far northern portions of the Lake Superior ice had become snow-covered (exhibiting a brighter white appearance), after a weak disturbance brought small bands of lake-effect snow over that area (GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR <a title=\"GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image animation\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/04\/140415-16_g13_ir_lake_superior_anim.gif\">image animation<\/a>). Even though the <a title=\"MODIS Sea Surface Temperature product\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/04\/MODIS_SST_20140416_0740.png\">MODIS Sea Surface Temperature<\/a> product showed that SST values over the open waters of northern Lake Superior were only in the low 30&#8217;s F, surface reports on the GOES-13 IR image animation indicated that the air moving across those waters in the wake of the weak disturbance was significantly colder.
