LATEST GOES FOG PRODUCT\r\nIMAGERY...<strong>AND IN RATHER SPECTACULAR DETAIL JUST REC`D SUOMI VIIRS\r\nNIGHTTIME HIGH RES VISUAL IMAGE<\/strong>...SHOW COVERAGE ALONG MUCH OF THE\r\nCOAST FROM PT REYES SOUTH TO THE VICINITY OF THE MONTEREY\r\nPENINSULA...AND A BROAD SWATH EXTENDING INLAND ACROSS SAN\r\nFRANCISCO AND THROUGH THE GOLDEN GATE TO THE EAST BAY. LATEST\r\nBODEGA BAY AND FT ORD PROFILER DATA INDICATE A MARINE LAYER DEPTH\r\nOF ABOUT 1300 FT. SOME THIN HIGH CLOUDS ARE ALSO PASSING THROUGH ABOVE.<\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A comparison of AWIPS images of the Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.7 \u00b5m Day\/Night Band (DNB) and the corresponding 11.45-3.74 \u00b5m Infrared brightness temperature difference (BTD) &#8220;fog\/stratus product&#8221; <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed this band of fog and stratus at 09:39 UTC or 2:39 AM local time. With ample illumination from the Moon <em>(which was in the Waxing Gibbous phase, at 97% of full),<\/em> the DNB image served as a &#8220;visible image at night&#8221; to help highlight the fog\/stratus features along the coast. Farther inland over the eastern portion of the satellite scene, the bright signature of <a title=\"NOHRSC modeled snow depth\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nohrsc.noaa.gov\/interactive\/html\/map.html?ql=station&amp;zoom=&amp;loc=37.114+N%2C+119.853+W&amp;var=ssm_depth&amp;dy=2014&amp;dm=3&amp;dd=10&amp;dh=19&amp;snap=1&amp;o9=1&amp;o12=1&amp;o13=1&amp;lbl=m&amp;mode=pan&amp;extents=us&amp;min_x=-123.38333333333&amp;min_y=32.60833333333&amp;max_x=-113.425&amp;max_y=42.566666666662&amp;coord_x=+-119.853&amp;coord_y=+++37.114&amp;zbox_n=37.11447916666273&amp;zbox_s=37.11447916666273&amp;zbox_e=-119.85310416666451&amp;zbox_w=-119.85310416666451&amp;metric=0&amp;bgvar=dem&amp;shdvar=shading&amp;width=1000&amp;height=1000&amp;nw=1000&amp;nh=1000&amp;h_o=0&amp;font=0&amp;js=1&amp;uc=0\"><strong>deep snow cover<\/strong><\/a> in the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada was also very evident on the DNB image.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/03\/140314_0939z_suomi_npp_viirs_dnb_fog_CA_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.7 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band and IR BTD &quot;Fog\/stratus product&quot; images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/03\/140314_0939z_suomi_npp_viirs_dnb_fog_CA_anim.gif\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.7 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band and IR BTD &quot;Fog\/stratus product&quot; images\" width=\"640\" height=\"557\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.7 \u00b5m Day\/Night Band and IR BTD &#8220;Fog\/stratus product&#8221; images [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>A sequence of three Infrared BTD images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> &#8212; Terra MODIS at 06:33 UTC, Suomi NPP VIIRS at 09:39 UTC, and Aqua MODIS at 10:44 UTC &#8212; offered detailed views of the inland progression of the fog\/stratus features, especially in the San Francisco Bay area and also down the Salinas Valley.
