AWIPS images of the MODIS visible, &#8220;cirrus detection&#8221;, 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR, and 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channels <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed the plumes around 19:51 UTC. The plumes of airborne aerosols exhibited a lighter gray &#8220;hazy&#8221; appearance on the visible image <em>(and to a lesser extent on the &#8220;cirrus detection&#8221; image, due to that channel&#8217;s sensitivity to particles that scatter light)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, there was a small cluster of hot MODIS 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR pixels with a maximum temperature of 46\u00c2\u00ba C located just northwest of Hobbs, New Mexico <em>(station identifier KHOB),<\/em> due to a grass fire that was burning in that area (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/12\/METAR_Plot_20081214_2000.png\">MODIS 3.7 \u00c2\u00b5m image<\/a><\/strong>) &#8212; and 250-meter resolution MODIS true color imagery <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> confirmed the presence of a lighter-colored smoke plume embedded within the longer orange-colored blowing dust plume. The burn scar from this fire was clearly evident on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/12\/081215_modis_truecolor.jpg\">MODIS true color imagery (viewed using Google Earth)<\/a><\/strong> on the following day <em>(located between Lovington and Maljamar, New Mexico)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/12\/081214_modis_truecolor.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS true color image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/12\/081214_modis_truecolor.jpg\" alt=\"MODIS true color image\" width=\"480\" height=\"348\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true color image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The strong winds <em>(which gusted as high as 71 mph at Tatum, New Mexico)<\/em> were producing mountain waves immediately downwind of the higher terrain in the &#8220;Big Bend region&#8221; of Texas &#8212; a comparison of 1-km resolution MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m and 4-km resolution GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> demonstrated the value of better spatial resolution for detecting such mesoscale phenomena.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/12\/081214_modis_goes_wv_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m and GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/12\/081214_modis_goes_wv_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m and GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m and GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Strong winds were producing plumes of blowing dust across parts of southeastern New Mexico and the\u00c2\u00a0 Texas panhandle region on 14 December 2008 &#8212; this blowing dust was reducing surface visibility to 1 mile at Lubbock, Texas (station identifier KLBB).
