The 1-km resolution AWIPS MODIS Sea Surface Temperature product <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> indicated water as cold as 46.1 F (7.8 C) near Sheboygan, Wisconsin (compared to water temperatures of 60-65 F [15-18 C] in central portions of Lake Michigan). This upwelling was also evident on the 4-km resolution <a title=\"GOES-12 IR image\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/09\/060925_g12_ir4.GIF\"><strong>GOES-12 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel<\/strong><\/a> data, which showed brightness temperatures as cold as 46.4 F (8 C) in that same region. Areas of upwelling bring cooler, nutrient-rich water to the surface, which enhances the growth of photosynthetic algae (as seen by the blue-green hues in the corresponding <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"MODIS true color image\" href=\"http:\/\/eosdb.ssec.wisc.edu\/modisdirect\/aqua\/calibratedImages\/2006\/268\/2006-09-25_1827-1839_WISC_010403_QKM.jpg\"><strong>MODIS true color image<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>And while we&#8217;re on the topic of cold water&#8230;check out the evolution of the intricate structure of the marine layer stratocumulus clouds over the California Current (<a title=\"GOES-11 visible (QuickTime animation)\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/misc\/blog\/060925_g11_vis_large.mov\"><strong>large-scale animation<\/strong><\/a> | <a title=\"GOES-11 visible (QuickTime animation)\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/misc\/blog\/060925_g11_vis.mov\"><strong>close-up animation<\/strong><\/a>)!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Westerly winds during the past 2 days (in the wake of a cold frontal passage) have helped to intensify the upwelling of cooler water along the Wisconsin shore of Lake Michigan.
