GOES-13 Visible (0.63 \u00b5m) images <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed <strong>(1)<\/strong> a variety of lake-effect cloud bands streaming across Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and western Lake Erie, <strong>(2)<\/strong> the motion of lake ice, due to strong northerly, northwesterly, and westerly winds across the region, and <strong>(3)<\/strong> the rapid formation of new lake ice in the previously ice-free nearshore waters in the far northwestern portion of Lake Superior.<\/p>\n<p>A comparison of Suomi NPP VIIRS Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) and False Color &#8220;snow\/ice vs cloud discrimination&#8221; Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images at 19:02 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> demonstrated how the RGB product could be used to highlight the various cloud features &#8212; snow and ice appeared as darker shades of red, while supercooled water droplet clouds were depicted as varying shades of white (glaciated cloud features exhibited a pink to lighter red appearance).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 652px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/02\/140227_1902z_suomi_npp_viirs_visible_rgb_great_lakes_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" title=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and false-color RGB images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/02\/140227_1902z_suomi_npp_viirs_visible_rgb_great_lakes_anim.gif\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and false-color RGB images\" width=\"642\" height=\"447\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS Visible <em>(0.64 \u00b5m)<\/em> and False Color RGB images [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A southward to southeastward surge of arctic air across the Great Lakes in the wake of a strong cold frontal passage (18 UTC surface analysis) on 27 February 2014 produced widespread lake-effect snow bands and also contributed to a renewed growth of ice.
