The <a title=\"mean ice concentration of Lake Erie\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/01\/140113_06z_lake_erie_ice_concentration.gif\"><strong>mean ice concentration<\/strong><\/a> of Lake Erie was 76.8% at that time (up from <a title=\"time series of Lake Erie ice concentration\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/01\/lake_erie_ice_concentration_time_series.png\"><strong>less than 20%<\/strong><\/a> at the begining of January). Note that there was no signal of any potential fog\/stratus over the lake on the corresponding <a title=\"VIIRS IR brightness temperature difference &quot;fog\/stratus product&quot; image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/01\/VIIRS_FOG_20140113_0642.png\"><strong>11.45-3.74 \u00c2\u00b5m IR brightness temperature difference<\/strong><\/a> &#8220;fog\/stratus product&#8221;, and very little thermal contrast seen in the <a title=\"VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/01\/VIIRS_11.45_BT_20140113_0642.png\"><strong>11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR<\/strong><\/a> image.<\/p>\n<p>Farther to the south over the Gulf of Mexico, the 08:21 UTC or 2:21 AM local time VIIRS <a title=\"VIIRS 0.7 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/01\/VIIRS_DNB__REF_20140113_0821.png\"><strong>0.7 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band<\/strong><\/a> image <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed large thunderstorms, with cloud-top shadowing from overshooting tops as well as a few bright &#8220;lightning streaks&#8221; due to cloud illumination by intense lightning activity at the time the instrument was scanning the region. Overlays of cumulative 1-hour cloud-to-ground lightning strikes indicated over 2400 strikes ending at <a title=\"1-hour lightning strikes ending at 08 UTC\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/01\/VIIRS_DNB_1_Hr_Lgtg_Plot_20140113_0800.png\"><strong>08 UTC<\/strong><\/a>, and over 1800 strikes ending at <a title=\"1-hour lightning strikes ending at 09 UTC\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/01\/VIIRS_DNB_1_Hr_Lgtg_Plot_20140113_0900.png\"><strong>09 UTC<\/strong><\/a> over the area of the satellite scene.
