The fire burned over 2200 acres and forced evacuations of some housing and a hospital (<a title=\"De Luz fire (InciWeb)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.inciweb.org\/incident\/3741\/\"><strong>InciWeb<\/strong><\/a>). McIDAS images of GOES-13 <em>(GOES-East)<\/em> 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel data <em><strong>(above; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> showed the smoke plume as it drifted quickly southwestward due to strong Santa Ana winds.<\/p>\n<p>A 2-panel comparison of GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR channel images <em><strong>(below; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> revealed that the fire &#8220;hot spot&#8221; <em>(red color enhancement on the shortwave IR images)<\/em> was detected about 30 minutes prior to the time when a smoke plume became obvious on the visible images.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/10\/131005_g13_vis_swir_socal_fire_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible (left panel) and 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR (right panel) images (click to play animation)\" alt=\"GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible (left panel) and 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR (right panel) images (click to play animation)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/10\/131005_G13_VIS_SWIR_SOCAL_FIRE_19.GIF\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible (left panel) and 3.9 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR (right panel) images (click to play animation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The fire growth slowed that evening as temperatures began to cool down and the strong Santa Ana winds gradually subsided, but fire continued to burn into the night &#8212; a small fire hot spot <em>(yellow to orange color enhancement)<\/em> was still evident on a Suomi NPP VIIRS 3.74 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR channel image at 09:18 UTC or 2:18 AM local time <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/10\/VIIRS_3.74_BT_20131006_0918_orig.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/10\/VIIRS_3.74_BT_20131006_0918_orig.png\" width=\"480\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The &#8220;De Luz&#8221; wildfire began to burn at the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base in southern California around 19:45 UTC or 12:45 PM on 05 October 2013.
