click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> showed an undular bore marking a surface-based convective outflow boundary which formed over southwestern Nebraska early in the day on <a title=\"31 July 2013 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20130731.html\"><strong>31 July 2013<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; this outflow boundary then propagated southwestward during the day and acted as a focus for the formation of severe thunderstorms over southwestern Kansas later that afternoon (<a title=\"SPC storm reports\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/climo\/reports\/130731_rpts.html\"><strong>SPC storm reports<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The southwestward-propagating outflow boundary \/ undular bore feature was also seen on 4-km resolution GOES-13 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel imagery <em><strong>(below; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130731_g13_wv_outflow_boundary_KS_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"GOES-13 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel images (click image to play animation)\" alt=\"GOES-13 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel images (click image to play animation)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/Reg_Water_Vapor_20130731_1645.png\" width=\"480\" height=\"342\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel images (click image to play animation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The GOES-13 imager 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel <a title=\"GOES weighting functions\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/wf\/\"><strong>weighting function<\/strong><\/a> calculated using the <a title=\"12 UTC rawinsonde data from Dodge City KS\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/KDDC_20130731_1200.png\"><strong>12 UTC rawinsonde data<\/strong><\/a> from Dodge City, Kansas <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that the weighting function peaked much lower in the atmosphere<em> (around 500 hpa)<\/em> than normal &#8212; this allowed a thermal signal (albeit a faint one) of the boundary layer convective outflow boundary cloud features to be seen on the water vapor imagery.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130731_12z_kddc_wv_wf.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"GOES-13 water vapor channel weighting function plot (using Dodge City, Kansas rawinsonde data)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130731_12z_kddc_wv_wf.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"287\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 water vapor channel weighting function plot (using Dodge City, Kansas rawinsonde data)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A good view of the undular bore <em>(which was trailing the leading edge of the convective outflow boundary)<\/em> could be seen on a comparison of 1-km resolution MODIS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images at 17:05 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130731_1705z_modis_vis_ir_outflow_boundary_KS_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"MODIS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images\" alt=\"MODIS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130731_1705z_modis_vis_ir_outflow_boundary_KS_anim.gif\" width=\"480\" height=\"342\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>New thunderstorms formed along the old convective outflow boundary (as it encountered <a title=\"GOES-13 sounder Lifted Index derived product images\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130731_g13_sounder_li_outflow_boundary_KS_anim.gif\"><strong>increasing instability<\/strong><\/a> across southwestern Kansas during the afternoon hours), as seen on 1-km resolution Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.
