AWIPS images of the <a title=\"MIMIC Total Precipitable Water product\" href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/mimic-tpw\/global2\/main.html\"><strong>MIMIC Total Precipitable Water<\/strong><\/a> (TPW) product <em><strong>(above; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> showed the westward motion of the tropical wave, which exhibited TPW values greater than 50 mm or 2.0 inches <em>(darker orange color enhancement)<\/em> over a broad area &#8212; in fact, TPW values in the vicinity of Puerto Rico reached 60 mm or 2.4 inches on 18 July. Much drier air with significantly lower TPW values <em>(30-35 mm or 1.2-1.4 inches, cyan to darker blue color enhancement)<\/em> followed in the wake of the tropical wave passage; this dry air was likely the leading edge of a westward pulse of the <a title=\"Saharan Air Layer (SAL) product\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130719_06z_meteosat_sal.jpg\"><strong>Saharan Air Layer<\/strong><\/a> or SAL (<a title=\"real-time SAL images\" href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/salmain.php?&amp;prod=splitE&amp;time\"><strong>real-time SAL images<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>McIDAS images of 4-km resolution GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel data <em><strong>(below; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> showed numerous clusters of thunderstorms with very cold cloud top IR temperatures &#8212; IR brightness temperature values were as cold as <strong>-82\u00c2\u00ba C<\/strong> <em>(violet color enhancement)<\/em> at <a title=\"17:10 UTC GOES-13 IR image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130718_G13_IR_PUERTO_RICO_BLUE_MAP.GIF\"><strong>17:10 UTC<\/strong><\/a>.The location of San Juan is marked by the &#8216;<strong>*<\/strong>&#8216; symbol on the images.The GOES-13 satellite had been placed into Rapid Scan Operations (RSO) mode, providing images as frequently as every 5-10 minutes.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130718_g13_ir_puerto_rico_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images (click image to play animation)\" alt=\"GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images (click image to play animation)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130718_G13_IR_PUERTO_RICO_BLUE_MAP.GIF\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images (click image to play animation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A 1-km resolution POES AVHRR 12.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed a strong thunderstorm beginning to move over the far eastern end of Puerto Rico at 19:35 UTC.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130718_1935z_poes_avhrr_ir_metars_PR_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"POES AVHRR 12.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image (with METAR surface reports)\" alt=\"POES AVHRR 12.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image (with METAR surface reports)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130718_1935z_poes_avhrr_ir_metars_PR_anim.gif\" width=\"480\" height=\"361\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">POES AVHRR 12.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image (with METAR surface reports)<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Abundant moisture associated with a strong tropical wave (18 UTC surface analysis) fueled strong thunderstorms which produced record-setting rainfall at San Juan, Puerto Rico on 18 July 2013.
