A comparison of McIDAS images of 1-km resolution GOES-15 <em>(GOES-West)<\/em> and GOES-13 <em>(GOES-East)<\/em> 0.63 \u00b5m visible channel data <em><strong>(above; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> showed the early stages of development of the storm that went on to produce large hail <em>(up to 3 inches in diameter)<\/em> and straight-line winds from a macroburst gusting as high as an estimated 95 mph (<a title=\"SPC storm reports\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/climo\/reports\/130708_rpts.html\"><strong>SPC storm reports<\/strong><\/a> | <a title=\"NWS Glasgow public information statement\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130709_kggw_pns.text\"><strong>NWS Glasgow public information statement<\/strong><\/a>). Some locations also received heavy rain<em> (as much as 1.87 inches in a 1 hour period)<\/em> that produced flash flooding. One interesting feature seen on the visible imagery was a region of <a title=\"inflow feeder bands\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130708_1830z_g15_g13_vis_inflow_feeder_bands_MT.png\"><strong>inflow feeder bands<\/strong><\/a> along the southern flank of the developing thunderstorm as it was northwest of Jordan <em>(station identifier KJDN)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>AWIPS images of 4-km resolution GOES-13 10.7 \u00b5m IR channel data with overlays of SPC storm reports <em><strong>(below; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> revealed the formation of an &#8220;enhanced-V&#8221; storm top signature with the storm as it was north of Jordan, which is usually an indicator that a storm is or is about to produce severe weather in the form of large hail, tornadoes, or damaging winds.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130708_g13_ir_MT_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images with hail and severe wind gust reports (click image to play animation)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/US_IR_Sat_20130708_2201.png\" alt=\"GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images with hail and severe wind gust reports (click image to play animation)\" width=\"479\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 10.7 \u00b5m IR channel images with hail and severe wind gust reports (click image to play animation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A closer view using 375-meter resolution <em>(projected onto a 1-km AWIPS grid)<\/em> Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00b5m visible channel and 11.45 \u00b5m IR channel data at 20:30 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed a textbook example of a well-defined enhanced-V signature on the IR image. The coldest cloud-top IR brightness temperature in the overshooting top region was <strong>-69\u00ba C<\/strong> <em>(black color enhancement)<\/em>, while the IR brightness temperature in the nearby upstream &#8220;warm wake&#8221; region was <strong>-44\u00ba C<\/strong> <em>(darker green color enhancement),<\/em> making for an impressively large 25\u00ba C &#8220;delta-T&#8221; value. About 1 hour later this storm began to produce 1.75 inch diameter hail in Garfield county (north of Jordan).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130708_2030z_suomi_npp_viirs_ir_vis_MT_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130708_2030z_suomi_npp_viirs_ir_vis_MT_anim.gif\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images\" width=\"479\" height=\"287\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00b5m visible channel and 11.45 \u00b5m IR channel images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of the VIIRS IR image with the corresponding GOES-13 IR image <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> demonstrated the advantages of using polar-orbiter satellite date for severe storm identification: (1) with higher spatial resolution, severe storm signatures such as the &#8220;enhanced-V&#8221; are much better defined, and (2) there is minimal &#8220;<a title=\"parallax shift\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/217\"><strong>parallax shift<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; associated with the large viewing angle from geostationary satellites positioned over the Equator.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130708_2030z_viirs_g13_ir_MT_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel and GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/07\/130708_2030z_viirs_g13_ir_MT_anim.gif\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel and GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images \" width=\"479\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00b5m IR channel and GOES-13 10.7 \u00b5m IR channel images<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>===== 10 July Update =====<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A comparison of before <em>(04 July)<\/em> and after <em>(10 July)<\/em> 250-meter resolution MODIS true-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images from the <a title=\"SSEC MODIS Today site\" href=\"http:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=a1&amp;product=true_color&amp;date=2013_07_10_191&amp;overlay_sector=false&amp;overlay_state=true&amp;overlay_coastline=true\"><strong>SSEC MODIS Today<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(below; displayed using Google Earth)<\/strong><\/em> revealed the extensive hail damage swath that was located from the north and northeast to the east and southeast\u00a0 of Jordan, Montana <em>(yellow arrows)<\/em>.
