resolution MODIS 11.0-3.7 \u00b5m fog\/stratus Brightness Temperature Difference (BTD) and the 4-km resolution GOES-12 fog\/stratus BTD <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed the value of higher spatial resolution MODIS data for detecting power plant plumes embedded within the stratus clouds over northern Minnesota on <a title=\"10 November 2008 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20081110.html\"><strong>10 November 2008<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 These plumes originated at large <a title=\"MN coal-fired power plants\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/10\/mn_power_plants.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>coal-fired power plants<\/strong><\/a> (or paper mills?) located across that region &#8212; emissions from these industrial sources acted as cloud condensation nuclei, causing a higher concentration of <em>smaller<\/em> supercooled cloud droplets downwind of the plume source.<\/p>\n<p>The MODIS Cloud Top Temperature values in the plume region were around -13\u00baC <em>(<strong>below<\/strong>, darker green color enhancement),<\/em> and the MODIS Cloud Phase product indicated that the stratus clouds were composed of supercooled water droplets <em>(blue color enhancement)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 648px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/11\/081110_modis_anim.gif\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS fog\/stratus, IR, Cloud Top Temperature, and Cloud Phase images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/11\/081110_modis_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS fog\/stratus, IR, Cloud Top Temperature, and Cloud Phase images\" width=\"638\" height=\"610\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS fog\/stratus BTD, Infrared Window <em>(11.0 \u00b5m),<\/em> Cloud Top Temperature and Cloud Phase images [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>GOES-12 Low Cloud Base product indicated that the stratus clouds had bases below 1000 feet <em>(<strong>below<\/strong>, green color enhancement),<\/em> while the GOES-12 Cloud Top Height product suggested that the tops of the stratus clouds were around 13,000 feet <em>(lighter green color enhancement)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 649px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2008\/11\/081110_modis_goes_anim.gif\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" interesting to note that similar power plant plumes were also seen on the MODIS fog\/stratus BTD product on the previous day <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>, but without a stratus cloud deck over
