GOES-14 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images at 1-minute intervals <em><strong>(above; click image to play animation; also available as a <a title=\"QuickTime movie of GOES-14 visible images\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/06\/130613_g14_vis_srso_damaging_winds_shelf_cloud_VA_NC.mov\">QuickTime movie<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> revealed the emergence of a well-defined shelf cloud across Virginia and North Carolina, which marked the leading edge of the gust front moving out ahead of the line of severe thunderstorms. According to the <a title=\"SPC storm reports\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/climo\/reports\/130613_rpts.html\"><strong>SPC storm reports<\/strong><\/a>, these storms produced a wide swath of damaging winds <em>(with gusts as high as <a title=\"wind gust of 78 mph in Virginia\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/06\/130613_G14_VIS_2135Z_G78_VA.GIF\"><strong>78 mph in Virginia<\/strong><\/a>),<\/em> along with some large hail <em>(up to <a title=\"hail report of 2.75 inches in diameter in Maryland\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/06\/130613_G14_VIS_1940Z_A275_MD.GIF\"><strong>2.75 inches in diameter in Maryland<\/strong><\/a>)<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the second consecutive day, the GOES-14 satellite was placed into Super Rapid Scan Operations for GOES-R (SRSOR) mode to monitor the ongoing severe bow echo\/low-end derecho event that was moving across the eastern US on 13 June 2013.
