Water vapor channel brightness temperatures were as warm as -9.0\u00c2\u00ba C <em>(darker orange color enhancement),<\/em> which is an abnormally warm\/dry value to be seen on water vapor imagery.<\/p>\n<p>This warm\/dry signal was also very apparent on imagery from the 3 water vapor channels <em>(<strong><a title=\"GOES sounder 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/rt\/viewdata.php?product=gsc_b12\">6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a title=\"GOES sounder 7.0 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/rt\/viewdata.php?product=gsc_b11\">7.0 \u00c2\u00b5m<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a title=\"GOES sounder 7.4 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/rt\/viewdata.php?product=gsc_b10\">7.4 \u00c2\u00b5m<\/a><\/strong>)<\/em> that are available from the GOES-15 sounder <strong><em>(below; click image to play animation)<\/em><\/strong>. These 3 GOES sounder water vapor channels sense the amount of mosture within 3 different vertical layers of the atmosphere, and are used to create the GOES sounder <strong><a title=\"GOES sounder Total Precipitable Water derived product\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/rt\/viewdata.php?product=pwa_sn\">Total Precipitable Water<\/a><\/strong> (TPW) derived product &#8212; which in this case depicted TPW values as low as <strong><a title=\"GOES-15 sounder Total Precipitable Water derived product at 18:00 UTC\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/06\/NA_GOES_Sounder_DPI_TPW_20130609_1800.png\">11 mm or 0.43 inch<\/a><\/strong> at 18:00 UTC. The <strong><a title=\"Blended Total Precipitable Water product\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/06\/Blended_TPW_20130609_1800.png\">Blended Total Precipitable Water<\/a><\/strong> <strong><a title=\"Percent of Normal TPW product\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/06\/Pct_of_Normal_TPW_20130609_1800.png\">Percent of Normal<\/a><\/strong> product indicated that the TPW values within the dry cut-off low were generally 40-70% of normal for this time of year over that region.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/06\/130609_g15_sounder_imager_wv_cutoff_low_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"GOES-15 Sounder and Imager water vapor channel images (click mage to play animation)\" alt=\"GOES-15 Sounder and Imager water vapor channel images (click mage to play animation)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/06\/US_Sndr_WV_6.5u_Sat_20130609_1246.png\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-15 Sounder and Imager water vapor channel images (click mage to play animation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The very warm\/dry signature seen on the GOES-15 water vapor imagery was well-correlated with elevated values of GOES-15 sounder <strong><a title=\"GOES sounder Total Column Ozone derived product\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/rt\/viewdata.php?product=o3_us\">Total Column Ozone<\/a><\/strong>, which suggests an abnormally low tropopause within that feature. This was verified with fields from the <strong><a title=\"CRAS model\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/cras\/\">CRAS model<\/a><\/strong>, which indicated that the height of the dynamic tropopause <em>(taken to be the PV1.5 surface)<\/em> was as low as the 570 hPa pressure level at 18:00 UTC. A comparison of the GOES-15 Sounder and Imager water vapor channel <a title=\"GOES weighting functions site\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/wf\/\"><strong>weighting functions<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that the individual water vapor channels were sensing radiation from layers that were at much lower altitudes in the dry air mass over Vandenberg, California than they were farther to the north over Medford, Oregon (KMFR) where the atmosphere had much more moisture distributed within the middle to upper troposphere.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/06\/130610_12z_vbg_mfr_wv_wf_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Comparison og GOES-15 Sounder and Imager water vapor channel weighting function plots\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/06\/130610_12z_vbg_mfr_wv_wf_anim.gif\" width=\"480\" height=\"284\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Comparison og GOES-15 Sounder and Imager water vapor channel weighting function plots<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AWIPS images of GOES-15 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel data (above; click image to play animation) showed the formation of an unusually dry signature associated with a cut-off low near the coast of southern California during the 08 June &#8211; 09 June 2013 period.
