AWIPS images of Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel and 0.7 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band (DNB) data with an overlay of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> revealed numerous cloud-top gravity waves. In addition to providing a &#8220;visible image at night&#8221; that helped to highlight these gravity waves as well as shadows from overshooting tops, the DNB image also showed several bright &#8220;streaks&#8221; denoting cloud tops illuminated by areas of intense lightning activity. The coldest cloud top IR brightness temperatures (associated with some of the overshooting tops) were -76\u00c2\u00ba C.<\/p>\n<p>A Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image with surface buoy reports <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed that there was a peak wind gust of 45 knots <em>(52 mph)<\/em> at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ndbc.noaa.gov\/station_page.php?station=42003\" title=\"Buoy 42003\">Buoy 42003<\/a><\/strong> <em>(which occured at 06:50 UTC)<\/em>. <\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/05\/Fixed_Buoy_Plot_20130501_0700.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image with surface buoy reports\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image with surface buoy reports\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/05\/Fixed_Buoy_Plot_20130501_0700.png\" width=\"479\" height=\"318\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel image with surface buoy reports<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of 1-km resolution Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR and 4-km resolution GOES-13 IR images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> demonstrated the advantage of higher spatial resolution for showing the detailed cloud top structures exhibited by the MCS.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/05\/130501_suomi_npp_viirs_g13_ir_GoM_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel and GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel and GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/05\/130501_suomi_npp_viirs_g13_ir_GoM_anim.gif\" width=\"479\" height=\"318\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel and GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A great deal of lightning was associated with this MCS as it propagated eastward across the Gulf of Mexico, with the storm often producing over 1000 cloud-to-ground strikes within a 15-minute period <em><strong>(below; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/05\/130501_g13_ir_ltg_GoM_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images with cloud-to-ground lightning strikes (click image to play animation)\" alt=\"GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images with cloud-to-ground lightning strikes (click image to play animation)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/05\/US_IR_Sat_20130501_0701.png\" width=\"479\" height=\"318\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images with cloud-to-ground lightning strikes (click image to play animation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A large nocturnal mesoscale convective system (MCS) was moving eastward across the Gulf of Mexico during the pre-dawn hours on 01 May 2013.
