Farther offshore, the BTD image also displayed a well-defined eddy and a few ship tracks embedded within the marine boundary layer stratus clouds.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/MODIS_FOG_20130422_0534.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS IR brightness temperature difference \" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/MODIS_FOG_20130422_0534.png\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS IR brightness temperature difference &#8220;fog\/stratus product&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Several hours later, a 1-km resolution Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.7 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band (DNB) image at 09:56 UTC or 2:26 AM local time <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> indicated that the leading edge of the southerly surge stratus cloud feature had moved to the north of <a title=\"Point Conception\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=34.44872+-120.47072+(Point+Conception+Lighthouse)&amp;hl=en&amp;ll=34.447689,-120.470581&amp;spn=2.801557,3.974304&amp;t=h&amp;z=9\"><strong>Point Conception<\/strong><\/a>. This demonstrates that the VIIRS DNB can provide a &#8220;visible image at night&#8221;, given sufficient illumination by the Moon (or other light sources). On this night the Moon was in the waxing gibbous phase, at 95% full.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/VIIRS_DNB__REF_20130422_0956.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.7 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/VIIRS_DNB__REF_20130422_0956.png\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.7 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel image at 21:13 UTC or 2:13 PM local time <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> showed leading edge of the southward surge stratus feature as it was curving eastward into the Monterey Bay area. Not far to the north, San Francisco reached a record high temperature of 83\u00c2\u00ba F.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/VIIRS_0.64_REF_20130422_2113.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/VIIRS_0.64_REF_20130422_2113.png\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel image<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>===== 23 April Update =====<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A comparison of 1-km resolution Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.7\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band and IR brightness temperature difference (BTD) &#8220;Fog\/stratus product&#8221; images at 09:28 UTC or 2:29 AM local time <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed that the leading edge of the southerly surge stratus clouds had progressed just to the north of <a title=\"Point Reyes\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Point_Reyes\"><strong>Point Reyes<\/strong><\/a>.
