A map of the 14-day total observed precipitation during the 07-21 April period <strong>(above)<\/strong> shows the widespread distribution of the heavy rainfall, which was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/130421_14day_departure_from_normal.jpg\" title=\"14-day rainfall departure from normal\">4-5 inches above normal<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/130421_14day_percent_of_normal.jpg\" title=\"14-day percent of normal rainfall\">300-400% of normal<\/a><\/strong> at many locations for this time of the year. Additional information can be found at the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crh.noaa.gov\/news\/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=lot&#038;storyid=94115&#038;source=0\" title=\"NWS Chicago\">NWS Chicago<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crh.noaa.gov\/ilx\/?n=swop-0415192013\" title=\"NWS Lincoln\">NWS Lincoln<\/a><\/strong> sites.<\/p>\n<p>The effect of this heavy rainfall was very apparent in a before <em>(05 April)<\/em> and after <em>(21 April)<\/em> comparison of 250-meter resolution MODIS false-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=t1&#038;product=false_color&#038;date=2013_04_21_111&#038;overlay_sector=false&#038;overlay_state=true&#038;overlay_coastline=true\" title=\"SSEC MODIS Today site\">SSEC MODIS Today<\/a><\/strong> site <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> &#8212; obvious changes can be seen in the width of sections of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Illinois_River\" title=\"Illinois River (Wikipedia)\">Illinois River<\/a><\/strong> <em>(which runs fron northeast through southwest across the center of the images)<\/em> and many of its tributaries. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/130421_river_gauges.jpg\" title=\"River gauges reporting moderate to major flooding\">138 river gauges<\/a><\/strong> were reporting moderate to major flooding levels on 21 April.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/130405-21_modis_falsecolor_IL_River_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/04\/130405-21_modis_falsecolor_IL_River_anim.gif\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" alt=\"MODIS false-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images from 05 April and 21 April 2013\" class \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS false-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images from 05 April and 21 April 2013<\/p><\/div>\n<p>AWIPS image comparisons of the standard 0.64\/0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel with the corresponding 0.86 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel from the VIIRS and MODIS instruments <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> show that the 0.86 \u00c2\u00b5m imagery can be useful for helping to monitor the areal coverage of significant water inundation following heavy rainfall events such as this.
