These storms produced a few reports of hail up to 1.0 inch in diameter, as well as a number of damaging wind reports which included a gust to 75 knots or 86 mph at Orlando International Airport at 18:40 UTC or 2:40 PM local time (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/climo\/reports\/130324_rpts.html\" title=\"SPC storm reports\">SPC storm reports<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>1-km resolution Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images with overlays of surface METAR reports and SPC storm reports <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> revealed that there was a cluster of overshooting tops with cloud-top IR brightness temperature values as cold as -67\u00c2\u00ba C <em>(darker red color enhancment)<\/em> that appearaed to be associated with the reports of high wind gusts at the surface.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/03\/130324_1833z_suomi_npp_viirs_vis_ir_metars_svr_reports_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/03\/130324_1833z_suomi_npp_viirs_vis_ir_metars_svr_reports_anim.gif\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images (with overlays of surface reports and severe weather reports)\" class \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images (with overlays of surface reports and severe weather reports)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of a 1-km resolution Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image with the corresponding 4-km resolution GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> demonstrated the advantage of higher spatial resolution for aiding in the identification of the location and magnitude of the coldest cloud-top IR brightness temperatures <em>(-67\u00c2\u00ba C with VIIRS, vs -60\u00c2\u00ba C with GOES)<\/em>. In addition, the effect of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/217\" title=\"the problem of parallax\">parallax<\/a><\/strong> was evident on the GOES-13 IR image, with features being displaced to the northwest.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/03\/130324_viirs_g13_ir_FL_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/03\/130324_viirs_g13_ir_FL_anim.gif\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR and GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images\" class \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR and GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>GOES-13 sounder Lifted Index (LI) and Total Precipitable Water (TPW) derived product images <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> indicated that moisture <em>(TPW values as high as 45 mm or 1.78 inches)<\/em> and instability <em><em>(LI values as low as -10.4\u00c2\u00ba C)<\/em><\/em> were in place in the pre-convective environment across central Florida at 16:00 UTC or 12:00 PM local time.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/03\/130324_16z_g13_sounder_li_tpw_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/03\/130324_16z_g13_sounder_li_tpw_anim.gif\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" alt=\"GOES-13 sounder Lifted Index and Total Precipitable Water derived product images\" class \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 sounder Lifted Index and Total Precipitable Water derived product images<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AWIPS images of GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel data (above; click image to play animation) showed a band of strong to severe thunderstorms that moved eastward across central Florida during the afternoon hours on 24 March 2013.
