AWIPS images of 4-km resolution GOES-13 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel images <strong><em>(above; click image to play animation)<\/em><\/strong> showed the evolution of the storm system on 25 February, which included the development of well-defined dry slot and comma head signatures.<\/p>\n<p>A comparison of 1-km resolution MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel, 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel, and 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel images <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> revealed a snapshot of the storm at 20:00 UTC or 3 PM local time on 25 February. A line of deep convection exhibiting cold cloud top temperatures extended from the Gulf of Mexico northward into Missouri, which produced large hail, damaging winds, and a tornado (<strong><a title=\"SPC storm reports\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/climo\/reports\/130225_rpts.html\">SPC storm reports<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/02\/130225_2000z_modis_vis_ir_wv_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible, 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR, and 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/02\/130225_2000z_modis_vis_ir_wv_anim.gif\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible, 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR, and 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Very strong winds were associated with this storm, which created a <a title=\"MODIS true color image (displayed using Google Earth)\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/02\/130224_modis_truecolor_google.jpg\"><strong>large area of blowing dust<\/strong><\/a> across southwest Texas and southeastern New Mexico on 24 February &#8212; and GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images <em><strong>(below; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> revealed additional areas of blowing dust across <a title=\"US Drought Monitor (southern US)\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/02\/130226_drought_southern_US.jpg\"><strong>drought-stricken<\/strong><\/a> areas of southern Texas on 25 February, where winds gusted as high as 56 mph and visibilities were reduced to 1 mile or less in some locations (see <a title=\"NWS Brownsville TX summary\" href=\"http:\/\/www.srh.noaa.gov\/images\/bro\/wxevents\/2013\/pdf\/February25_winddust.pdf\"><strong>NWS Brownsville TX summary<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/02\/130225_g13_vis_TX_bldu_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images (click image to play animation)\" alt=\"GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images (click image to play animation)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/02\/130225_G13_VIS_TX_BLDU_22.GIF\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel images (click image to play animation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During the following overnight hours the clouds had cleared across the Texas panhandle region, which allowed the Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.7 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> to provide a &#8220;visible image at night&#8221; <em>(aided by bright illumination from the &#8220;full snow moon&#8221;)<\/em> to display the areal extent of the fresh snow cover at 08:38 UTC or 3:38 AM local time. While the deep snow pack appeared somewhat colder on the corresponding VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image, the exact edges of the snow cover were easier to see on the Day\/Night Band image.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/02\/130226_suomi_npp_viirs_dnb_ir_TX_snow_cover_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.7 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band and 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/02\/130226_suomi_npp_viirs_dnb_ir_TX_snow_cover_anim.gif\" width=\"480\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.7 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band and 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During the afternoon hours on 26 February, a comparison of the Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel image with the corresponding false-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) image at 20:02 UTC or 3:02 PM local time <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> aided in the discrimination between snow cover <em>(varying shades of darker red on the RGB image)<\/em> and supercooled water droplet cloud features <em>(lighter shades of white)<\/em>.
