KUDOS TO THE SAT AFTERNOON RUNS OF THE HRRR WHICH WAS THE SOLE MODEL THAT COMPLETELY NAILED THE SNOWFALL FORECAST.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A sequence of 4-km resolution GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images <em><strong>(above; click image to play animation)<\/strong><\/em> showed the disturbance as it was moving southeastward through the region during the night-time (pre-dawn) hours on <a title=\"03 February 2013 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20130203.html\"><strong>03 February 2013<\/strong><\/a>. Some of the cloud elements appeared to be convective in nature, with cloud top IR brightness temperatures as cold as -40 C <em>(yellow color enhancement)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A comparison of a 4-km resolution GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image with a 1-km resolution MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> demonstrated the advantage of improved spatial resolution for depicting the location and edges of the individual cloud elements with polar-orbiting satellite imagery. Despite the times shown on the image labels, the actual times that the 2 satellites were scanning this area were fairly close &#8212; the northwestward displacement of the cloud features on the GOES-13\u00c2\u00a0 IR image is due to <a title=\"the problem of parallax\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?s=problem+of+parallax\"><strong>parallax<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/02\/130203_modis_g13_ir_STL_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel and GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/02\/130203_modis_g13_ir_STL_anim.gif\" width=\"479\" height=\"301\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel and GOES-13 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On the following afternoon, a comparison of a 1-km resolution Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel image with the corresponding False-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) image at 18:51 UTC or 12:51 PM local time <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the northwest-to-southeast oriented swath of snowfall &#8212; snow on the ground appeared as the darker shades of red in the RGB image. The highest snowfall amount reported was 5.0 inches (<a title=\"NWS St. Louis event summary\" href=\"http:\/\/www.crh.noaa.gov\/news\/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=lsx&amp;storyid=92325&amp;source=0\"><strong>NWS St. Louis event summary<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 489px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/02\/130203_1851z_suomi_npp_viirs_vis_rgb_stl_snow_band_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and False-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/02\/130203_1851z_suomi_npp_viirs_vis_rgb_stl_snow_band_anim.gif\" width=\"479\" height=\"301\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and False-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A closer view using 250-meter resolution MODIS true-color and false-color RGB images from the <a title=\"SSEC MODIS Today site\" href=\"http:\/\/ge.ssec.wisc.edu\/modis-today\/index.php?satellite=a1&amp;product=true_color&amp;date=2013_02_03_034&amp;overlay_sector=false&amp;overlay_state=true&amp;overlay_coastline=true\"><strong>SSEC MODIS Today<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the snow cover at 19:03 UTC or 1:03 PM local time.
