This transverse banding &#8212; with the cloud features oriented <strong><a title=\"GFS winds at 500, 300, and 250 hPa\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2013\/01\/130124_00z_gfs_500_300_250_winds_canada_anim.gif\">perpendicular to the flow<\/a><\/strong> &#8212; is a satellite signature that indicates an increased potential for turbulence. Suomi NPP VIIRS imagery is now being broadcast at full 375-meter resolution over the new &#8220;<strong><a title=\"POLARSAT NOAAPORT channel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nws.noaa.gov\/om\/notification\/tin12-45viirsaaa.htm\">POLARSAT<\/a><\/strong>&#8221; NOAAPORT channel (currently only available for the Alaska Region), for display in the next generation of AWIPS (AWIPS II).<\/p>\n<p>The corresponding Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images are shown below.
