{"id":11983,"date":"2012-12-10T23:59:45","date_gmt":"2012-12-10T23:59:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=11983"},"modified":"2012-12-14T23:42:56","modified_gmt":"2012-12-14T23:42:56","slug":"contrail-detection-using-shortwave-ir-imagery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/11983","title":{"rendered":"Contrail detection using shortwave IR imagery"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/121210_suomi_npp_viirs_vis_ir_swir_contrails_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" title=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible, 3.74 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwve IR, and 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/121210_suomi_npp_viirs_vis_ir_swir_contrails_anim.gif\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible, 3.74 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwve IR, and 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images\" width=\"480\" height=\"381\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible, 3.74 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwve IR, and 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A wide band of multi-layered clouds was oriented southwest-to-northeast along a cold frontal boundary moving through the Ohio River Valley region on <a title=\"10 December 2012 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20121210.html\"><strong>10 December 2012<\/strong><\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 On a 1-km resolution Suomi NPP VIIRS 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image at 17:42 UTC <em><strong>(above),<\/strong><\/em> much of this cloud band was topped with cirrus clouds exhibiting IR brightness temperatures in the -50 to -60 C range <em>(orange to red color enhancement),<\/em> indicating a cloud top height in the 30,000-40,000 foot range (<strong><a title=\"KILM rawinsonde data\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/121211_OOZ_ILM_RAOB.GIF\">KILM rawinsonde data<\/a> | <a title=\"KPIT rawinsonde data\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/121211_OOZ_PIT_RAOB.GIF\">KPIT rawinsonde data<\/a><\/strong>)&#8211; the general cruising altitudes of most aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>It is interesting to note that the Suomi NPP VIIRS 3.74 \u00c2\u00b5m shortwave IR image revealed a large number of contrails across that cloud band &#8212; the contrails appeared <strong>darker<\/strong> than the background cirrus clouds, due to reflection of solar radiation by smaller ice crystals or by supercooled water droplets.
