AWIPS images of GOES-13 0.63 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel data <strong><em>(above; click image to play animation)<\/em><\/strong> showed the development of a tightly-curved deformation band across Minnesota during the day &#8212; much of the heavier snowfall totals occurred beneath the pivot point of this deformation feature.<\/p>\n<p>GOES-13 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel images <strong><em>(below; click image to play animation)<\/em><\/strong> showed the development of a dry slot along the leading edge of the core of a potential vorticity (PV) anomaly <em>(red contours)<\/em> that was moving northeastward over southern Minnesota. The approach of this PV anomaly was helping to enhance upward vertical velocities, thereby increasing snowfall rates.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/121209_g13_wv_MN_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"GOES-13 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel images (click image to play animation)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/Reg_Water_Vapor_20121209_1945.png\" alt=\"GOES-13 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel images (click image to play animation)\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-13 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel images (click image to play animation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A northwest-to-southeast oriented <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/121209_21z_g13_wv_pv_xsec_line.jpg\" title=\"vertical cross section line\">vertical cross section<\/a><\/strong> using NAM40 model fields at 21 UTC <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> showed that the PV anomaly was lowering the height of the dynamic tropopause <em>(taken to be the pressure of the PV1.5 surface)<\/em> down to the 525 millibar level over southern Minnesota.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/NAM40_lineE__Potential_Temp_20121209_2100F003.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"NAM40 vertical cross section\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/NAM40_lineE__Potential_Temp_20121209_2100F003.png\" title=\"NAM40 vertical cross section\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">NAM40 vertical cross section<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of 1-km resolution images of MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel, 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel, and 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel data at 19:48 UTC <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> revealed hints of some subtle banding structure over parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin, which was likely helping to enhance snowfall rates over those areas.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/121209_1948z_modis_vis_ir_wv_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible, 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR, and 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/121209_1948z_modis_vis_ir_wv_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible, 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR, and 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel images\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible, 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR, and 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On the back side of the storm, cold arctic air was being drawn southward across wesern North Dakota and South Dakota &#8212; and a comparison of a MODIS 0.65 \u00c2\u00b5m visible image with the corresponding false-color Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) image using the 2.1 \u00c2\u00b5m &#8220;snow\/ice channel&#8221; <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> revealed small &#8220;river-effect cloud bands&#8221; forming <em>(most notably over Lake Sakakawea in North Dakota)<\/em> as this cold air moved over the still-unfrozen waters of the larger reservoirs of the Missouri River.
