Earlier in the day, a comparison of McIDAS-X images of 375-meter resolution Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.64 \u00c2\u00b5m visible channel and 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel data <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> revealed detailed patterns of cloud top wave structure: (1) the formation of &#8220;transverse bands&#8221; oriented perpendicular to the flow <em>(which is fairly common in strong tropical cyclones),<\/em> and (2) an arc-shaped gravity wave train in the northwest quadrant, which was likely propagating outward, away from the storm center. There were also a number of convective overshooting tops which exhibited IR brightness temperatures of -90 to -95\u00c2\u00ba C <em>(yellow enhancement)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/121203_mtsat_ir_bopha_landfall_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"MTSAT-1R 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images (click image to play animation)\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/12\/121203_MTSAT_IR_BOPHA_10.GIF\" alt=\"MTSAT-1R 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images (click image to play animation)\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MTSAT-1R 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR images (click image to play animation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>McIDAS-X images of MTSAT-1R 10.8 \u00c2\u00b5m IR channel images <strong><em>(above; click image to play animation)<\/em><\/strong> showed Super Typhoon Bopha as the eye made landfall around 20 UTC or 4 AM local time. Media reports indicated that there were as many as 270 fatalities as a result of flooding, mudslides, and falling trees.<\/p>\n<p>A few hours prior to landfall, a comparison of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/mcidas\/software\/v\/\" title=\"McIDAS-V\">McIDAS-V<\/a><\/strong> images of Suomi NPP VIIRS 0.7 \u00c2\u00b5m Day\/Night Band and 11.45 \u00c2\u00b5m IR data <strong><em>(below;<\/strong> images courtesy of William Straka, CIMSS)<\/em> again showed a signature of gravity waves propagating outward from the storm center &#8212; at this time <em>(17:09 UTC or 1:09 AM local time)<\/em> these gravity waves could be seen in all four quadrants of the storm top.
