This mountain wave signature indicates the potential for turbulence &#8212; and there were a few pilot reports of light to moderate turbulence in that region between the altitudes of 25,000 and 38,000 feet above ground level (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/11\/121108_g15_wv_1702z_pirep.jpg\" title=\"pilot report of moderate turbulence at 17:02 UTC\">17:02 UTC<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2012\/11\/121108_g15_wv_0100z_pirep.jpg\" title=\"pilot report of moderate turbulence at 01:00 UTC\">01:00 UTC<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Occasionally the crests of these mountain waves are marked by &#8220;<a title=\"rotor clouds\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rotor_cloud\"><strong>rotor clouds<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; &#8212; but they also frequently occur in clear air, which underscores the importance of using water vapor imagery for their detection.
